Snow flurries hang in the February air, encouraging us to go inside where it's warm and get closer with ourselves and our beloveds. Scanning the internet for tips on "How to Love Yourself" produces many returns, but let's get real: many of us put others' well-being before our own. Why would we habitually say negative things about our own "vehicle for awakening" when we'd never imagine saying such comments to our loved ones?
 We need to treat ourselves like we'd like others to be treated, reversing the common adage and giving our bodies the appreciation they deserve. This year, make yourself your own Valentine and take time to use only positive, re-assuring, and grateful language in your thoughts and daily observations. Congo Coffee Project Raises $16K in 2012
Last year, nationwide sales of Equal Exchange's Congo Coffee raised over $16,000 to benefit the Panzi Hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We are proud to know that Harvest Market's customers and staff helped contribute to this sum and thus directly assisted the Maison Dorcas' aftercare program, a program created by the Panzi Foundation. Take Action:
No GMO Salmon!
On Dec. 21, 2012, the FDA declared that AquaBounty's GMO salmon poses no "significant" risk to the environment. This recent FDA decision comes on top of the agency's 2010 declaration that the GMO salmon were safe for humans to eat, despite no independent long-term studies.
If approved, AquaBounty's GMO salmon would be the first genetically engineered animal to be sold for human consumption and could appear in restaurants and supermarkets as early 2013.

Alex Babowicz & Dried Tart Cherries
|
 Our staff pick of the month comes from our Bulk Foods Manager, Alex, who opts for Dried Tart Cherries from our bulk section when reaching for a quick snack. At Harvest Market, we have two varieties of tart cherries, unsweetened and sweetened. The unsweetened type is lower in sugar, whereas the sweetened variety is quite sweet and reminiscent of Fruit Rollups, making them a healthier replacement for conventional fruit snacks. In addition to their fantastic taste, dried tart cherries have several purported health benefits. Cherries, high in antioxidants, are claimed to assist with maintaining normal joint function and reducing cardiovascular inflammation.
