Sunflower Bee

Take Action:
Save the Bees!

According to the Organic Consumers Association, billions of honey bees have been disappearing from hives across the U.S., a phenomenon scientists call Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). CCD is significant because many agricultural crops depend on pollination by bees. While all of the causes of this disaster are yet to be established, strong evidence suggests a link to Bayer's insecticide imidacloprid

Take Charge of Your Health in 2013
By Bob Kleszics, Owner

How important is your health?  On a scale from one to ten, how do you rank where you are now and where you want to be at the end of the year?  Are you a six that wants to be a nine?  Great!  Are you a two that wants to be a ten?  You have more work to do.  In either case the next time you have a mirror in front of you, take a good look at the person staring back and realize that you are the one who is in charge of your health.  Not your G.P.  Maybe not that celebrity Doc on T.V.  Not even your well-meaning aunt who reads Prevention Magazine cover-to-cover.

It's a new year. Embrace the possibility that you can feel better, ache less and have more energy to live life to the fullest.  There's a lot of health information out there and much of it is conflicting.  Modern medicine has become the modality of disease management and is being held hostage by the prescription drug manufacturers.  Their primary motive is maximizing profits for shareholders.   For them, prevention is not profitable.  For you, prevention is the key to maintaining optimal health.

There is no secret formula or magic pill.  Though many of the supplements that Harvest Market sells can be very helpful in helping counteract a nutrient deficiency, or strengthening a body system, they are but an adjunct to a healthy way of eating. But what exactly is a healthy way of eating?  Is there one " best" diet for everyone?  Unfortunately that's where much of the conflicting information comes into play.  Whether you are vegan or a grass-fed meat and dairy omnivore (and I have been both), a raw foodie or a macrobiotic, one thing is clear-the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) of overly-processed convenience foods loaded with sugar, refined carbs, rancid vegetable oils,  "approved" industrial chemicals, pesticide residues and now GMO contamination is the most significant contributor to a society plagued with obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.  And you can jump off of that train before it derails.

So here are seven suggestions for 2013.  Try them. Play with them. Be your own best guinea pig in your own non-placebo-controlled, eyes-wide-open study of one.

Food for Thought
Another reason to give up genetically modified foods in 2013...

"Photographic Adventure Reveals the Frightening Deadness of Genetically Engineered Corn Field"
By Dr. Mercola

The "faster, bigger, cheaper" approach to food is slowly draining dry our planet's resources and compromising your health. The Earth's soil is depleting at more than 13 percent the rate it can be replaced. We have already lost 75 percent of the world's crop varieties over the last century.  Over the past 10 years, we've had 100 million tons of herbicides dumped onto our crops, polluting our soil and streams... And genetically engineered (GE) crops are now speeding up the destructive process by completely altering the composition of soil bacteria in the fields where such crops are grown.

It's imperative to understand that agriculture is a complete 'system' based on inter-related factors, and in order to maintain ecological balance and health, you must understand how that system works as a whole. Any time you change one part of that system, you change the interaction of all the other components, because they work together. It is simply impossible to change just one minor aspect without altering the entire system, and this is in part why GE crops are not a viable alternative.
