The season of local bounty is upon us!  Suddenly, there are local, organic strawberries.. and scallions.. and collards.. and bok choy.. and kale.. and spinach.. AND fresh, whole chickens from Rumbleway Organic Farm in Conowingo, MD every other Friday (including this one, May 18).
Getting hungry?
Organic strawberries arrive each Wednesday from Esh Farm until the season is over.  Organic rhubarb is in, too.. pick up some pie shells or try your hand at rhubarb chutney.
Keep up with each week's local produce arrivals and specials on our blog.  We're excited to feature the Organic Produce Geek from Four Seasons: read his weekly updates and look for the Organic Pick of the Week signs in our produce aisle.

Sugar may be the most dangerous legal substance there is.  (We don't want to believe it either- join Harvest Market to revolutionize your sugar intake in the month of July.

Dr. Mercola has put together an excellent guide to hidden, dangerous ingredients in beauty products.  Scroll down the page to discover what hides in conventional skincare.  Ironically, many of these "beauty" ingredients are associated with female cancers. (Men aren't exempt either- see what toxins can do in males here.)  Harvest Market stocks loads of options for non-toxic skincare.  Those bothered by breakouts are often surprised to find it's the toxins causing the trouble, not your skin.

Unfortunately, being honest about food and health often means reporting truths more easily ignored.  Recent news reveals arsenic in conventional chicken, other toxic ingredients in processed foods, even a connection between oral contraceptives and psychological disorders (surprise: the connection is in the intestinal flora).  These toxins may not be "harmful" individually considered, but it is our belief that over time, our immune systems fail under the cumulative stress and degenerative disease results.

The good news is, the solution is simple.  By taking control of your kitchen and choosing truly whole ingredients, one meal at a time, you can create lasting change and deep, vibrant health.  Take a look at Eden Foods' Constellation of Organic Values to learn the positive effects of choosing organic and sustainably grown foods.

Staffperson Alex F. may just revolutionize your lunch.  His salad-packing method is nearly perfect.  Chop and/or soak one week's supply of salad toppings, such as carrots, peppers, beets, legumes, nuts, or seeds.  Pack small glass jars (clean soup or peanut butter jars with lids are perfect) with one day's toppings per jar, and top each serving with salad dressing.  Using a vinegar-based dressing will keep veggies fresh longer.  Store salad greens and sprouts in a separate container, then just combine today's greens with today's topping jar when it is time to eat.
