The Hockessin Business Association presents the third annual Trick-or-Treat Hockessin.  This family-friendly event brings local businesses together to treat our community, in costume!  See http://www.facebook.com/pages/Halloween-in-Hockessin-2011/166158440136632 for more information, or start at Harvest Market and pick up a Candy Corn Map of area businesses offering all manner of festive freebies.  Participating children must be dressed for Halloween and accompanied by an adult.

For the grown-ups, the third installment of our Staff Natural Chef Challenge is all about squash.  This versatile fruit fills hungry stomachs when the weather turns chilly and we all crave starch.  Vote for your favorite staff creation, and see how easy it is to recreate the dish at home.

Dr. Brian Mowll Discusses

Adrenal Fatigue                 7 - 9 pm

Do you feel tired and run down?  Need coffee to get going?  Are you having problems sleeping or do you wake up groggy?  Adrenal fatigue is one of the most overlooked and under-diagnosed conditions effecting millions of American men and women.  The adrenal glands (which sit on top of the kidneys) make chemicals like adrenaline to give you energy, cortisol to manage stress, blood sugar, and inflammation, and are responsible for hormones such as estrogen and testosterone.

In this informative and engaging seminar, Dr. Mowll will discuss the main symptoms of adrenal dysfunction, how it effects the thyroid, digestive tract, blood sugar, brain, and hormone balance.  He'll reveal the best tests to assess adrenal health, which doctors seldom order, and practical ways to address the root causes of adrenal problems and enhance the way your body functions so that you can finally regain your energy and feel good again.

MONTHLY SPECIALS

Save on biodynamic herbs, truly non-toxic, delicious fragrance sprays, and Fair Trade shea butter body care in October: http://harvestmarket.wordpress.com/specials-and-staff-favorites/

In November, we're looking forward to savings on New Chapter, Dr. Hauschka Body Care and Kits, and Vessel Spirit Cups, which make great stocking stuffers.  These colorful, BPA-free plastic cups with lid and straw keep drinks cold without sweating.  Spirit cups also make sipping while driving less likely to leave a tea stain on your favorite shirt.

Where Does Your Food Come From?

October has been all about raising awareness and changing the food paradigm.  Fair Trade Month and Non-GMO Month both focus on key issues of modern food production: fair compensation for farmers around the world, and the effects of untested technology on the DNA of plants and, ultimately, humans.

Harvest Market is highlighting two Fair Trade companies this month: Equal Exchange, whose focus is coffee, chocolate, and bananas, and Alaffia, whose handcrafted shea butter products are made by a woman-worker co-op in Togo, West Africa.  Read about Equal Exchange's Farmer Co-ops here http://www.equalexchange.coop/farmer-partners, and see how Alaffia is committed to human values here: http://alaffia.com/fair-trade.asp

To learn how Genetically Modified Organisms adversely affect our food supply, check out the Non-GMO Project: http://www.nongmoproject.org/

Wheat, corn, soy, and almost every other grain crop grown in the USA are now predominantly Genetically Modified.  When you shop, look for the Non-GMO Project Verified shelf tag to choose products made with grains and seeds designed by nature, not by agribusiness giants in a laboratory.  The surest way to avoid extensive GMO contamination is to buy Certified Organic.  By supporting the Non-GMO Project, you can help ensure that the organic certification is never modified to include these potentially dangerous creations.

Harvest Market is conducting a Register Round-Up Campaign through October to support the efforts to mandate GMO labeling, and to support the verification of companies committed to Non-GMO ingredients sources.  Through Monday, when you check out at the register, consider rounding up to the nearest dollar and donating your change to this important work.  The store will match all donations up to $1,000.  We sincerely thank everyone who has contributed so far!
