Where Does Your Food Come From? Here at the end of stone fruit season, we're getting all we can of ultra-local peaches, plums, and nectarines from Glen Willow Orchards. This is one of the rare exceptions we make for conventional produce in our store. Minimally sprayed, these fruits are near peak ripeness the day they arrive in our store. USA cherries are incredible right now, too. Get the most of your favorite stone fruits while they are still in season! We're thrilled to see the return of local apples, and USA Bartlett and Bosc pears are back on the scene. Sweeten the warm days with stone fruits, and ring in the cool nights with local apple cider... this time of year, there are incredible local flavors to be had around every corner.

PLEASE NOTE... Herbalist Donna Merrill will be away from the store Friday, 9/16 through her return on Monday, 10/3.

Food Politics The Truth in Labeling Coalition (http://truthinlabelingcoalition.org/) is spearheading a serious campaign for clear, truthful labeling of Genetically Modifed Organisms in our food supply. The choice to consume or avoid GMOs can be a crucial one: this technology is linked to all sorts of environmental dismay, as well as being implicated in potentially devastating health effects such as infertility. Follow the link above to sign the Citizens' Petition, and consider taking time to contact your Congressional representatives regarding this critical turning point in the marriage of technology and our food supply.

Health Information Coconut is the new darling of the natural foods world. This superfood is rightly lauded: its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, plus an abundance of surprisingly essential saturated fat, make it a superior nutritional choice to many foods. Find it in coconut-based vinegars, electrolyte beverages, creamy milks, amino acid supplements, gluten-free flours, nectars, crystals, spreads, butters, frozen desserts, and tried-and-true oil form. Coconut is as beneficial topically as internally: try it on sunburn, cuts and scrapes, blemishes. It works famously as a carrier oil for helpful herbs that need to thoroughly penetrate the skin.
For honest information about coconut's incredibly healthful fats, see http://westonaprice.org/know-your-fats
It is essential that this natural resource be harvested sustainably. Drought in Thailand and other coconut-producing areas has reduced this year's crop yield and driven up prices. As with any bountiful gift of the land, exploitation can reduce the crop's ability to sustain itself long-term. Look for companies that respect coconut farmers and set high standards for sustainable farming practices. Check out http://www.coconutsecret.com/index.html for more information on this brand, who harvest coconut tree sap in place of the mature fruit. Other individual producers should have sustainability statements on their websites, such as Luna and Larry's, makers of Coconut Bliss: http://coconutbliss.com/about/sustainability. If you cannot find such a statement, it may be best to purchase coconut from a more trustworthy brand.

Ingredients Update Since Tom's of Maine was bought by Colgate in 2006, they have reformulated many products. We have discontinued several as the new formulas did not meet our ingredient standards.
We understand Propolis and Myrrh toothpaste is next on the chopping block to be "improved" with industrial additives replacing truly natural ingredients- such as witch hazel and aloe replaced by cheaper natural gas and oil derivatives. The Propolis and Myrrh we have here on the shelf may be all that is available. We stocked up so you can too. As the reformulation continues, we'll keep a critical eye on options in quality natural dental care.
