Developer Brings Bikes, Carsharing and Students Together
Town-Gown Nation News
MHN Online, by Keith Loria
Candlebrook's student housing brand Letter 9 has entered two new partnerships that will make transporta-tion simple and easy for all of it's residents, agreeing to offer Zipcar and Zagster to its five student housing properties. "Letter 9 offers college students off-campus housing communities that foster healthy living, personal growth and authentic connection," Adam Zucker, vice president, development at Candlebrook, told MHN. Zipcar will offer two cars parked on each property that can be reserved by the hour or day, making it easy to get downtown, do errands or even take a road rip. Zagster, a leading provider of bike sharing programs for the real estate industry, will provide transportation perfect for student's active and healthy lifestyle.
City Welcomes Delegation from Shimla, India, as Part of CityLinks Partnership
Boulder Colorado, by Sarah Huntley
The City of Boulder is pleased to announce that a delegation from the Municipal Corporation of Shimla, India, will visit Boulder on Aug. 17 for a week. The delegation will be led by Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan, Commissioner Pankaj Rai, City Project Coordinator Komal Kantariya and Superintending Engineer Sushil Justa. Also joining the delegation will be Program Manager Jessica Cho from the ICMA CityLinks Climate Adaptation Partner-ship Program. ICMA chose Boulder  earlier this year as a "resource city" to work with Shimla in a nine-month partnership focused on sharing experiences, best practices and lessons learned by the two cities as they grapple with climate change. In addition to appearing before City Council, the Shimla delegation will be meeting with city officials and climate change experts in the local area in order to further this workplan.
Grant Supports Planning for Research Park
Pittsburg State University, by Staff Writers
The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced that Pittsburg State University is the recipient of a $330,000 grant that could lay the groundwork for the develop-ment of a science and research park that will be a "key commercialization point in regional business develop-ment." Shawn Naccarato, executive director of the Center for Innovation and Business Development at PSU, said securing the grant was a cooperative effort that included the university; the City of Pittsburg; Project 17, a multi-county effort to improve the economy of southwest Kansas; and SEK, Inc. Jay Byers, Pittsburg assistant city manager, said the grant would help define and prioritize the resources available as the university and the city look for ways to commercialize research underway or planned at PSU's Tyler Research Center.
Clearing 2015: There's a Student Accommodation to Suit Everyone
The Independent, by Jeff Manno
Over the past 20 years, the student accommodation market in the UK has grown and evolved. There are a number of housing options available to students, uni-versity halls on campus, traditionally for first years, privately-funded purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) and rented accommodation off campus man-aged by a private landlord. It is no longer assumed that students will go straight into university halls for their first year and on to rented accommodation for the remaining years. According to research from Savillis, the UK property investment market is seeing record levels of investment in the sector, with $4.2 billion in the first five months of 2015, already exceeding levels achieved for the whole of 2014.
Campus Related Fire Deaths Have Dropped
WWLP.Com, by David McKay
Since 2000, 170 people have been killed in college- university-related fires. Four out of five of the deaths occur in off campus housing. In the last two academic years, the number of campus-related fire deaths have dropped. According to Campus Firewatch, four people died from such fires last year nationwide, an all-time low from a high of 20 in the 2005-06 school year. Ed Comeau, a publisher at Campus Firewatch, stated to 22News, "It is still a tragedy but it's great to see such an improvement and I'm really attributing that to increased education and awareness that college and universities are doing to teach the students about their responsibility when it comes to fire safety." Amherst Fire Chief Tim Nelson said, "Knowing that you need to have an escape route, knowing that you're in a safe place and taking steps to insure that it is safe [are important steps]."
