TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK - THANK YOU!

A big shout out to all the Super Hero parent volunteers that helped with Staff Appreciation last week. Without all your Super Powers, the week would not have been possible. The entire Rockwell staff had a Dyna'mite time.

Also, thanks to our Head Captain extraordinaire, Renee Lawson for coordinating our weekly mission. You truly are a Super Hero.

ROCKWELL "FIELD DAY" IS COMING!
On your marks! Get set! Go!

Mark your calendars for Rockwell's annual Field Day which will take place rain or shine on Wednesday, June 10th from 9:30 - 11:15 a.m. K-5 students will participate in a wide variety of fun events that test their endurance and creativity.

We need your help to make this exciting day as fun and organized as possible!
  • Event Hosts will receive all materials needed to set up and manage a field event station. Hosts will offer students encouragement and praise for their participation, and assist with station clean up. Host check-in is at 9:00 a.m. in front of the school. Younger siblings are welcome to accompany hosts, just let us know so that we can assign you to an appropriate station. All hosts are required to have a current background check on file with LWSD. Also, let us know if you would like to be paired at your event station with an English-speaking volunteer.
  • Water Balloon Fillers will receive 30 small balloons and nozzle via Kid Mail the week prior to field day, and will need to return the filled balloons to school with your student the morning of Wednesday, June 10th. Drop containers will be located in front of the school.

***We are also looking for new recruits who would be interested in taking over the duties of Field Day Co-Chairs (Volunteer Coordinator and Equipment Coordinator) for next year as we will sadly have to say our goodbyes. There is lots of time to jump on our team now and get the hang of things while having some fun.

If you are interested in either position or would like to volunteer as a Host or Water Balloon Filler please email Laura Drover

Thank you!

MUSICAL "WRAP UP"

Thank you to the nearly 900 family and friends that joined us for the 2015 Rockwell musical, The Little Mermaid JR, presented by the Rockwell PTA and Youth Theatre Northwest. Special thanks to my volunteer team: Beatriz Gomez-Albadawi, Ryan Butler (Redmond Middle School), Angela Shannon, Tracy Brooks, Colleen Broughton, Emily Papel, Angie Ballas, Jan Stemple, Mandi Bhatia, Rebecca Murman, Hildebrand Photography, Kirsten Moreno and Lacie Hendriksen.

I am extremely proud of the 47 cast members and their parents that sacrificed free time and sometimes not-so-free time to rehearsals, costume fittings and volunteer committees. No flu bug, lost tooth, new ortho device or spring vacation got in the way of a great show. At the cast party, cast members reflected on highlights that included new friendships, over-the-top costumes and makeup, and the thrill of performing at the Redmond Performing Arts Center.

For Rockwell students entering 4th and 5th grades this fall, I hope you will consider the musical as a must-do enrichment activity from March-April 2016. Watch for news next winter from Rockwell Musical Producer, Beatriz Gomez-Albadawi, on which show the school will do next!

You're ALL Invited!

*Maybe it's your last meeting or maybe it's your first one ever...regardless, please come!!  We need a good showing of support to vote for our elections for next year. Get involved with your child's school and PTA.

ACADEMIC & EVENT CHAIRS NEEDED FOR NEXT YEAR

Many chair or co-chair positions need to be filled for next year prior to the end of this school year. Please consider chairing (or co-chairing with another parent) one of the many positions that need filling! We can't do it without all of you and unfilled positions may result in the cancellation of some of our treasured events/programs.

Some positions include

Chairs or co-chairs for fun events such as Heritage Night, Bingo Night, School Dance, and Field Day. Academic Enrichment programs need parent coordinators for: Salmon in the Classroom, Chess Club, Lego Club, and the PTA Reflections Art Contest.

PLEASE READ FULL ARTICLE HERE!
(*More available positions listed here. Note: Membership chair has now been filled)

MATH OLYMPIAD COMPETITION UPDATE

On Saturday May 2nd Norman Rockwell Elementary participated in Washington State Math Olympiad in Seattle on the premises of John Muir Elementary School. Congratulations to the 5th and 4th grade students of the two teams. You were awesome!

Both teams won superior medals for the long problem solving, showing great reasoning, logic, detailed explanations and organization. One team got excellency ribbons for the short session problems - Geometry, Number Sense, Algebra, Probability, Measurement.

Great job to Benjamin Y., Jonathan M., Sayan B., Elizabeth A., Xin S. and Kirill U. This year we had one mixed team of 5th and 4th grade. Their results are amazing. Good teamwork and collaboration.

This is one of the most challenging math competitions for the elementary school students as it prepares them towards the junior-high school, where written explanations, reasoning and accurate step-by-step instructions are essential part of the learning process. This year students succeeded in it.

Special thank you to the parents who support our students throughout the school life and add math excitement in their everyday life.

JOIN THE REDMOND SCHOOLPOOL AT NORMAN ROCKWELL

Update: Wow! Our first week is over and 74 families signed up for SchoolPool! Help spread the word to continue raise funds for PTA & reduce car trips. If you haven't done so yet, click here to get signed up and earn $10 for our school (and a free Redbox coupon for the students!)

**********

Norman Rockwell Elementary and the City of Redmond are partnering up again to encourage our students to walk, bike, carpool, and ride the bus to school in May! SchoolPool will help reduce traffic in the neighborhood and encourage a healthier lifestyle by getting students to exercise and socialize while commuting to and from school.

The Redmond SchoolPool is a secure, online network for our school that helps families find carpool partners, form 'walking school buses' and start a 'bike buddies' program.

Participants can raise money for our school and rewards for your student! (In the fall, we raised $4,870.00 for Rockwell...let's do it again!)

  • For Our School: Earn $10 for the school/PTA when you sign up and another $10 when you take a walking, biking, carpool or bus trip and add it to the online calendar ($20/family).
  • For Your Student: Earn a free Redbox movie or game rental when your student takes at least one trip on the calendar.

How to Participate:

1. Register for SchoolPool here. (This is a new, easier reg. system so if you signed up back in the fall, please sign up on the new system.)
2. You'll receive an email to verify your account
3. Search for carpool partners, neighbors to walk with, or others to bike with
4. Add your SchoolPool trips (walking, biking, carpooling, and bus) to the online calendar.

5. Earn rewards for your school & your student!

You can email the SchoolPool staff if you have any questions or call (425) 556-2419.

Thanks for helping us raise money & reduce traffic around Norman Rockwell Elementary!
