READ ACROSS AMERICA - MARCH 2 - 6

Rockwell Celebrates  READ ACROSS AMERICA!

This year marks the eighteenth anniversary of Read Across America, a time in which we honor Dr. Seuss and celebrate reading.  RAA is sponsored annually by The National Education Association and focuses on motivating children to read.  The celebration takes place each year on Dr. Seuss's birthday (Monday, March 2nd) when schools, libraries and community centers participate by bringing together kids and books.  Rockwell will be celebrating RAA with a weeklong tribute March 2nd to 6th.

You'll see many signs of our celebration around the school... balloons, student art, a Dr. Seuss-themed Bonus Spirit Day on Friday, and daily drop everything and read breaks.  For more information visit: www.nea.org/readacross.

Let's keep reading a priority - grab your hat and read with the cat!

ATTENTION MICROSOFT PARENTS

Great News for Microsoft Parent Volunteers - you get a raise!

Microsoft announced last week its new Tech Talent for Good program. As part of this new program, they are increasing their company volunteer match to $25 per hour. This means that four hours of your employee volunteer time to Rockwell also results in a $100 donation to the school!

So please get your volunteer time submitted (designating Rockwell Elementary PTA, a 501c3), so we can collect the funds for more great programs and activities at our school!

Think of the possibilities:
  • Volunteer for an hour once a week in the classroom, health room, feeding the salmon, or running club, etc = $100 for our school each month
  • Chaperone a spring field trip or two = $100 for our school
  • Volunteer a shift or two at the upcoming school dance, ice cream social, or field day = $100 for our school
For more information about the Tech Talent for Good program, please visit the following blog: http://bit.ly/1LzXp6L

SUPPORT THE NORMAN ROCKWELL ECOLOGY RUN

Every spring, the fifth grade classes get to attend "Outdoor Education", a three-day camp, where the students receive lessons in exploring ecosystems, understanding natural resources, and improving outdoor skills. The cost of this camp to our families can be a burden, so we hold this annual fundraiser to offset some of the expense. It is a one-day fun run to raise money for every fifth grader, and whatever is raised is divided evenly by the number of students to reduce the cost for every family.

  • The funds raised by ALL students will help 5th graders go to camp this year, where they learn about our northwest ecology!
  • The kindergarten through fourth grade class that raises the most money will earn a PIZZA PARTY!
  • Students will collect flat pledges prior to running laps at the Ecology Run.
    • Students who raise $30 or more will receive a 2015 Ecology Run T-shirt
    • Students who raise $50 or more will receive the T-shirt and their name will be added to the "Hall of Fame" plaque by the office
    • Students who raise $100 or more will receive the T-shirt, be added to the "Hall of Fame", and receive a trophy at the awards assembly in June
  • All donations are eligible for corporate matching - if your company participates in a matching program, please consider matching your gift.
    • Simply note: "ASB-Outdoor Education" to designate the payment to the correct account.

The donations are all flat donations - they are not based on the number of laps that are run. We encourage every child at Rockwell to participate if possible - because eventually every child will become a fifth grader and receive these benefits for their own Outdoor Ed camp experience. In the past we have raised over $10,000 - which is an amazing help to offset the cost of the trip!

The fifth grade teachers will be outside during lunch recess on Wednesday, March 25th to facilitate the run. All pledges need to be received by Friday, March 27th.

If you have any questions, please contact Fifth Grade Teacher,

Mrs. Weinmeister at [email protected].

Thank you so much for supporting our students and participating in the Ecology Run!

RUNNING CLUB IS BACK FOR SPRING

SALMON UPDATE & VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

WE HAVE SALMON FRY!

The fourth grade classes are very excited that this is their year to raise the salmon at school. Each year, Rockwell participates in the

"Salmon in the Classroom" program, raising and releasing hatchery salmon into a local stream. This year, we have been given around 200 coho salmon from the Issaquah State Hatchery to raise.

We received our coho eggs in early January, and they quickly hatched a week later and retreated into the gravel as alevins (egg-sac fry). As of the last week in February, the coho have started to emerge from the gravel as fry! When all are up and out, the fry will start to need more care, with feedings several times a day, and weekly, if not daily, tank maintenance.

We are looking for parents that are interested in helping raise our coho fry. What does this mean? It means about 45 minutes one day a week until we release the fish. Each day during the school week from early March through mid-April (about 6-7 weeks), a parent volunteer will help students feed the fish during their lunch recess. This entails supervising 4 students who will feed the fish, check the tank operation, and water quality. Because we are interacting with the students, you also need to be approved by the District as a volunteer. Applications are online here

This is a special part of being a fourth grader, and the kids, the fish, and I would appreciate any help. I will provide training on these activities during a short session, in early March. I have attempted to set up the tank this year to require minimal maintenance, so this should be pretty simple! Really! So, if you can spare 45 minutes one day per week, please consider volunteering. You can email me at: [email protected]

Thank you!
