What to work on this week...
For most golf operations (whether year round or seasonal), except for our far Southern friends, you are now at about the half way point of your golf season. Last week we wrote about a mid-season financial review and this week we want you to spend some time thinking about your message, your marketing and your customers:

1. Internet Marketing Housekeeping
  • Take a look at each page on your website to make sure that all content is up to date. It is easy to post things in the spring and then forgot about them as your team gets busy. Check all your website links to make sure everything still works.
  • What messages do you want to focus on for the remainder of the season? These should come out of any financial goals that you set last week. Ensure that your team knows where your focus lies for the next 90 days and is communicating this to your customers in person, on your website, through your newsletter and on your social media channels.
  • Update your newsletter header and your Facebook cover photo with a fresh new message and image.
2. What are your customers saying?
  • If you are not already surveying your customers on a monthly or more regular basis mid-season is a good time to get their feedback. There is still enough time left to take action where needed.
  • Survey Monkey is a free and easy tool to use to build a short survey (maximum 10 questions). If you are a Constant Contact user there is an easy to use survey tool built in (with unlimited questions for a $5 to $10 up-charge depending on the number of contacts you have). You could go old-school with printed comment cards in your golf shop or clubhouse or if you have the time and resources do in person surveys on your last green one weekend in July.
  • Ask your customers how being at your facility makes them feel. Get to the heart of why they enjoy playing your course or eating in your restaurant and what would make them visit more often.

Golf Facilities in Canada Report 2015
Golf Facilities in Canada 2015 is the result of a collaborative effort between Golf Canada, the PGA of Canada and the National Golf Foundation (NGF). The report identifies all existing public and private facilities in the country; and defines supply by province, type and number of holes. The report also includes information on facility openings and closings, as well as the number and type of facilities currently in development.

Highlights that interest us the most...

  • Nine-hole golf accounts for almost 37 per cent of Canada's total supply, which outnumbers 18-hole supply in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In Saskatchewan, 18-hole courses are outnumbered 3 to 1 by 9-hole courses.
  • Canada features nine 12-hole facilities (six of which are in Ontario) and three 6-hole facilities.

These stats were the most surprising to us but also the most promising. Six, nine or twelve hole golf courses address both time and cost constraints of potential golfers. While nine-hole courses make up 37% of the total # of courses it would be interesting to know the total revenues that they represent (which would be much, much lower) but they are also where the most growth potential lies.

Best BC Craft Beers - Mt. Begbie
On a recent road trip to the Kootenays we stopped in Revelstoke, BC for a meeting and stayed overnight. We were not sure what to expect but we found the new Best Western Plus Revelstoke above expectation and had an enjoyable dinner at Zalas Restaurant near by.

Mt. Begbie, the local brewery named after the glacial mountain that dominates the Revelstoke skyline, was on tap so we gave it a try.
