LEGISLATIVE DAYS WIND DOWN, ONE REMAINS

With the end of the 2013 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature clearly in view, the House and Senate made strides this week in passing a number of bills, despite the occasional shouts of some members. The Republican majority, keen to see its priorities realized, made swift use of cloture to end the debate on a number of issues, including debate on revisions to the Alabama Accountability Act which grants tax credits to families seeking to transfer out of failing schools.

Passed this week, the following bills head to the Governor for consideration:

  • Adopted the $5.8 billion Education Budget (includes 2% pay raise for teachers)
  • Adopted the $1.75 billion General Fund Budget
  • Passed changes to the Alabama Accountability Act
  • Passed a law that removes the head of AEA from the RSA Board
  • Passed a bill to allow school systems to hire armed guards
  • Passed historic structure rehab tax credits

The Senate and House both have a full agenda ahead of them as they scramble to complete their work before midnight on Monday, May 20 (the final day). Both chambers will convene at 9:00 am. During that 15 hour period of time, they will address the remaining legislative priorities of the leadership, pending confirmations to various boards and commissions, and legislation lucky enough to make it on the special order calendar.
