Welcome fellow dog-lovers to the latest issue of Paw Prints! With the NCAA tournament starting, we thought it would be fun again this year to do our own version. Thus, we encourage you to visit our Facebook page and play our second annual Paws & Pals Mutt Madness. Due to last year's popularity, the field has been expanded from 64 to 96 dogs. Simply pick your favorite dog for each "pairing". Only the "winners" (more votes) for each pairing will advance to the next round.

The final round will be held April 7th with the Mutt Madness champion announced the next day. There will only be one winner! They will receive a fabulous $300 vacation package to Paws & Pals!  And, we will also donate $200 to the Carver-Scott Humane Society in their name. We wish all 96 contestants the best of luck and may the top dog win!

Avoiding Springtime Hazards
By the time the cold winter winds and snowstorms are replaced by pleasant sun-warmed spring days, pets are more than ready to return outdoors. Although spring is probably one of the most welcomed seasons, pet owners need to keep in mind that with the change in weather and increase of outdoor activity comes an increase of dangers for their beloved animal friends. Owners should be aware of these springtime hazards some of which might seem trivial, but can have fatal consequences.

The first thing many people like to do when they are sure winter is gone for good is get their yards back in shape. It's common knowledge that many fertilizer products can cause serious problems if ingested by animals or humans. It is still important to pay close attention to what the product labels say. Just because you see the term "natural" does not mean the product is nontoxic. There are also less-obvious problems lurking in gardens and lawns of which pet owners might not be aware.

Nancy K.
Pet Care Specialist

Nancy started at Paws & Pals in 2009, left to go back to another career, and then returned in July 2013. She decided working in mortgage banking wasn't what she really wanted and missed working with dogs. In between, she substituted on a regular basis. Nancy is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR, and has completed extensive training for understanding canine body language, pack behavior and group play. She recently received her Canine Basic certification from the International Pet Boarding and Sitting Association (IBPSA). Nancy has also completed an advanced Canine Body language course from the Dog Gurus.  She says "I found out that I really enjoy working with dogs. I believe each one has their own personality and I enjoy bonding, talking, and playing with them. I find pleasure in taking care of dogs, and get a sense of gratification that what I do for the dogs gives them and their family comfort....that their pets are being well taken care of and makes them happy to come back."

Nancy has a cat, Spanky, and 2 dogs, Lola and Phoebe. Phoebe is a rescue dog and it took a lot of time and patience until she came around to humans. She is doing great now! Nancy has had rescue dogs in the past and will do it again. In her spare time, Nancy enjoys working on her house, yard, and RV, or doing things with her family and friends. During the summer she and her husband like to travel in their RV or ride motorcycles.

Pal of the Month

Howard M.

Hi Everyone! My name is 'Sir Howard King of Hearts' because I have two heart shaped spots on my side, but you can just call me Howard. I'm an 8-month-old Great Dane puppy. My family brought me home in October when I weighed 30 pounds, now only 5 months later I'm 107 lbs. When my parents tell me it's time to go to doggie daycare at Paws & Pals, I get very excited because I know I will get to play with my friends all day!

At home, I love spending my time snuggling with my parents and my big sister Delilah, who is also a Great Dane. Some people think my parents are crazy for getting two big dogs, but I think they're wonderful. I love wrestling with my sister and taking toys from her when she's not looking. I am a very talented boy, my parents taught me how to sit, lie down and shake, which I will happily do if they have treats to offer. Although I loved running through the snow, I'm looking forward to my first Spring where I will be able to help my parents in the garden and play with my sister in our puppy pool!
