Plumbing Fun Facts

A third of people flush their toilet while they're still sitting on it.
The average person visits the toilet six to eight times a day. During these six to eight visits to the toilet a day, each individual uses approximately 57 sheets of toilet paper.
If a drip from your faucet fills an eight ounce glass in 15 minutes, it will waste 180 gallons per month and 2,160 gallons per year.
In the tomb of a king of the Western Han Dynasty in China (206 BC to 24 AD), archaeologists discovered a 2,000-year-old "toilet" - complete with running water, a stone seat and even a comfortable armrest! The finding marked the earliest-known water closet, which is quite like what we are using today, in the entire world.
In a typical home, more than 9,000 gallons of water are wasted while running the faucet waiting for hot water.
As much as 15% of your annual water heating costs can be wasted heating this extra 9,000 gallons. (Ask us about the solution)
Though we all have heard the many slang-words of which his cognomen is probably responsible for, the truth is... there is no hard evidence anywhere that English plumber, Thomas Crapper, was the inventor of the modern-day amenity that often bears his less-than-flattering name. (It's believed Crapper may have bought the patent rights from another man - Albert Giblin - and marketed the concept as his own).
The term "plumbers" was a popular name given to the covert White House Special Investigations Unit established during the presidency of Richard Nixon in response to the leaked "Pentagon Papers" documents. Their job was to plug intelligence leaks in the U.S. Government relating to the Vietnam War; hence the term "plumbers".
More toilets flush during half time of the Super Bowl than during any other time of year.
The toilet uses more water than any other appliance in the house.

"Pantry Raid" Chicken Enchilada Casserole
"With some chicken, a box of corn bread mix, and a few pantry items, you can whip up a tasty Mexican-inspired casserole."
Submitted By: mama411
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 45 Minutes
Ready In: 1 Hour
Servings: 6
INGREDIENTS:
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1/4 cup water
1 envelope taco seasoning mix
1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 pound chicken breast tenderloins
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained
1/4 cup cream cheese
1 cup shredded Mexican-style cheese
blend, or more to taste
1 (7.5 ounce) package corn bread mix
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
Mix tomato sauce, water, taco seasoning mix, and chili powder together in a saucepan; bring to a simmer over medium heat.
Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown chicken tenderloins on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. Pour tomato sauce mixture over the chicken, bring to a simmer, and cook over medium-low heat until chicken tenderloins are no longer pink inside, about 8 minutes. Transfer chicken to a bowl and shred; return shredded chicken to the sauce. Mix in black beans and cream cheese until thoroughly combined.
Pour chicken mixture into prepared baking dish. Top with shredded Mexican cheese. Whisk corn bread mix, egg, and milk in a bowl, and spoon the batter over the chicken mix.
Bake in the preheated oven until the casserole is bubbling and the corn bread topping is browned and set, about 30 minutes.

Greetings!
Well so much for the early summer weather; at least for now. And certainly, more nice weather is coming and we'll enjoy every gorgeous ray of sun we can get. But, this is the Willamette Valley and remember, it's our rain that keeps things beautiful in this part of the country.
This reminds me of the remodeling dreams we've experienced over the years. The dream was seen as the finished product: the new upstairs bathroom, the upgraded kitchen, etc. These dreams all needed some "rain," or preparation and work to finally become a beautiful reality.
How about your dreams for that new kitchen or other home improvement? Have you finalized your plans yet? Are you prepared to bring them to fruition soon?
If those plans require plumbing or electrical work, let us know. We're able and ready to help make those remodeling dreams and/or repair projects become a reality. Going in to the nicer weather is an excellent time to get started.
In this month's Newsletter we have summarized a few simple plumbing repairs that many can do themselves. And don't forget; if you need a little help, we'll always be here for you.
Finally, rain or shine, we hope you have a wonderful day.
Kindest Regards,

3 simple plumbing repairs

Toilet running
Running toilets, sometimes referred to as a toilet with a "phantom flush", are often simple to repair. As shown above, there is a flapper that sits on the flush valve. This flapper, when activated or flushed, allows the water in the tank to displace the water in the bowl, thus "flushing the toilet".
Eventually these flappers will wear out, become warped, etc., causing water to leak in to the bowl. Once the water level gets down to a certain level, the fill valve does what it's supposed to do - refill the tank. The sound of a running toilet, or refilling the tank, is what is sometimes referred to a a phantom flush.
If the flapper is the culprit, you can remove it and take it to your local plumbing supply house where they can sell you a new one. There are other situations that can cause a toilet to run, but by far this is the most common one.
Unclogging your bathroom sink
Clogged bathroom sinks and bathtubs can be a real problem, especially for those of us with long hair. Often times, you will find he culprit - hair - just under the top of the drain.
The tool being used above, a "Zip Stick", can be purchased at most big box stores such as Home Depot. The same clog is also common in bathtubs and the Zip Stick often works well there, too.
Unjamming a garbage disposal

Jammed garbage disposals can be quite a nuisance especially when they clog up your kitchen sink. The good news is that it is often a simple task to unjam the disposal.
As you can see from the image above, a disposal will jam, or stop turning, when a foreign object such as a bone becomes caught up in the impeller blades.
You know your disposal is jammed if it makes a humming sound when the switch is turned on and it is not turning inside. If there is no sound when the switch is turned on, the unit probably became too hot and turned itself off.
Pressing the reset button on the bottom side of the disposal will restore power to the unit and it can be turned on again to see if it is still jammed.
If it is still jammed, you will need to use a tool in an effort to unjam it.
Note: never put your hand inside a garbage disposal and *always* turn the power off at the electrical panel while performing any repair work.
You can, however, insert a broom handle or similar object, and try to move the blades back and forth. Better yet, you can use a 1/4" or 5/16" Allen wrench. Simply insert the wrench from below and work it back and forth until it frees up. If it doesn't free up, the disposal is bad and will need to be replaced.

Memorial Day - May 27 2013

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery are decorated by U.S. flags on Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is a day which occurs every year on the final Monday of May. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor day marks its end.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.
By the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as people visited the graves of their deceased relatives in church cemeteries, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events.
Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountains. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles.
People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with kinfolk and others. There often is a religious service and a "dinner on the ground," the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the "memorial day" idea.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, living or dead.

Tips for hiring a contractor

Check with the CCB (verify contractor's license), before asking for bids or entering into any agreements with a contractor. When checking a contractor's license: - Verify the contractor is actively licensed. This means the contractor can legally work in Oregon, has a surety bond, provided proof of liability insurance at the time of application and insurance renewal*, and assures that you have access to the CCB (Construction Contractors Board), Dispute Resolution Process.
- Check the contractor's history of complaints (disputes) and any other licenses associated with the contractor's name.
Get more than one bid from licensed contractors before making a decision. Don't automatically accept the lowest bid. A higher bid may be worth the price in better materials or workmanship. If you get a very low bid, the contractor may have made a mistake or not bid everything. If the bid is too low to make a profit, they may use cheaper materials or take shortcuts. Ask for references. Check with previous customers. Were they satisfied with the work? Was the work completed on time? Did the contractor return phone calls? Check the BBB (Better Business Board) and Angie's List for records of complaints and / or praise. Learn as much as you can about the contractor you are hiring. Read "Building/ Remodeling Checklist" and "16 Ways to Avoid Remodeling, Repair and Construction Problems" for a more comprehensive list of issues to consider when hiring a contractor. *Many insurance companies do not contact the CCB when the policy is cancelled since they are not required by law to do so. Consumers may want to verify coverage is still in effect.
The above information was taken straight from the CCB as we believe they are your best resource for checking lincensing.
