CA$H COWKudos to this month's $5 CA$H COW winners: Adri Lang of Denver and Laura Sweeney of Cedar Falls.

Every month we mark several of our milk jugs with either $5 or $100 under the label for our CA$H COW contest. It's hard to get the label off cleanly, so the easiest way to check your jug is just finish the milk and look inside at the label. There will either be a "5" or a "100" if you're a winner!

It's possible to find winning jugs of all kinds of milk we sell (skim, 1%, whole and chocolate).

In February, there will be two jugs marked with $100. Your best chance to find a big winner jug is in the next few days!

There are also 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize. View details here on our website.

G'DAY, MATES --- The kangaroos (Pogo, Razz and Larry) have been seen playing in the snow this winter on milder days, but mostly they hang out together in their barn to keep cozy.

Wisconsin cheeses: Extra 10% off!

This month, we have an in-store special at the Cedar Falls Outlet and Waterloo Moo Roo. All Wisconsin cheeses are an extra 10% off. For customers with a free membership, that's a total of 20% off!

Bread now available at CF Outlet

We now have bread for sale at the Cedar Falls Outlet! We have bread from two different Iowa bakeries: Big Sky Bread in Urbandale, Iowa, and Daily Bread Bakery in Algona, Iowa. It's delicious! This is an exciting new development for us and we're ready to experiment with what we offer. If you have any requests, suggestions, special orders, or other comments about the bread we carry, please let the employees at the Outlet know!

A Moo Roo love story

Perfect for Valentine's Day, we have a pair of extra special Customers of the Month for February: Megan Gross and Michael Berns. They have a sweet story to tell.

"Megan's aunt, Lisa Dalrymple, taught Michael at St. Edward grade school and tried to get them to meet each other as college students, thinking they would make the perfect couple. Both were starting their fifth year of college (Michael at Iowa State and Megan at Loras). They first met on a blind date at Moo Roo in July 2012, and the rest is history!"

Congrats to these two lovebirds, who will be married in July. They will each receive a $5.00 gift certificate to use at our stores and a couple of free hands-on farm tour passes. For their honeymoon, perhaps? :)

We've featured both of these ladies before, but these two are our Valentines this month. Len (left) and Dazzle are the two oldest cows in the herd and have been producing the milk you drink since we started bottling on the farm in February 2004. They have served a lot of customers!

In this photo they are sharing a breakfast of silage. Because of their age, they get special treatment and get to roam free on the farm (not behind any fences). We're not worried about them leaving, as they know who takes care of them!

Together, they:
  • Are 24 years old.
  • Will be having their 9th (Len) and 10th (Dazzle) calves in the next week.
  • Are great-great-grandmothers.
  • Have produced almost 540,000 pounds of milk. That's 1,077,760 servings!

Wish them luck on their deliveries and we'll let you know what they have!

Cooking with Hansen's

Truffles are remarkably easy to make - just melt some chocolate and heavy cream. You can add any extracts or flavorings you want, then top with your choice of melted chocolate, sprinkles, dried fruit, nuts, you name it! Make a few of these for your sweetheart this month.

  • 12 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, roughly chopped
  • 2/3 cup Hansen's heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or other extract/flavor of your choice)
  • Toppers such as cocoa powder, flaked coconut, chopped nuts, sprinkles, etc. for rolling the truffles in
  • Optional: Almond bark for dipping the truffles
In a medium saucepan, heat the cream over medium heat to almost boiling. Don't let it boil! Remove from the heat and add the chocolate and vanilla extract. Stir until completely smooth. Pour into a glass bowl and put in the refrigerator for about 1-1/2 or 2 hours. You want it to be set but not hard. Scoop out with teaspoons or tablespoons (depending on how large you want the truffles) and form into balls with your hands.

At this point, you have two options: roll in a topper right away, or dip in melted almond bark.

If you roll them in a topper right away, just put them on a plate and chill until ready to serve.

If you want to dip them in melted almond bark, melt the bark according to package directions, dip the truffle balls, place on parchment or wax paper, and sprinkle with a decoration/flavor (sprinkles, sea salt, nuts, coconut, etc.). Chill until ready to serve.

  • Instead of using vanilla, try almond extract, orange extract, or other flavors.
  • Once the chocolate/cream mixture is perfectly smooth, add finely chopped dried fruit, nuts, crystallized ginger, or even dried chilli peppers!
  • Get creative with the toppers. Chopped, freeze-dried strawberries will give the truffles a fun pop of pink for Valentine's Day! Also fun - crushed peppermints, super-mini-marshmallows, crushed candy bars ... the sky's the limit.
