Graduation can be an exciting time, and also an emotional experience, as we watch our students complete a milestone and prepare to embark on their next phase. At this time of year,I often find myself mentioning  how quickly time passes. Working in a school, particularly at this time of the year, is certainly a reminder of how these beautiful souls grow so fast. Already, our Kindergarten classes have been preparing for their leap into first grade, starting with their graduation on May 13.

I initially started working at SDFAS as a third grade English teacher. My first class was filled with amazing students, all so unique and fascinating in their own ways. I've had the pleasure of watching them grow and mature, and here they are now in eighth grade and getting ready to graduate on June17. Hard to fathom! So, yes, time flies by, and I am sure many of you agree.

This week's ECHO will inform you on the numerous upcoming events at school. Next week, our middle school theater company, "La Troupe," will go to the 8th Annual Dallas International School Multilingual Theater Festival. Be on the lookout for information on the First SDFAS "Fête de la Musique" where parents, staff and students are invited to demonstrate their musical talents during a special presentation in the auditorium. Watch for updates on all of our upcoming events on the school website and in the ECHO and please do not hesitate to email me any feedback on this publication.

Thank you.

Happy Reading!

Chers parents,

Bonne lecture !

LE CP APPROCHE POUR LES ÉLÈVES DE GRANDE SECTION

FIRST GRADE, HERE WE COME!

The time of year has come when the Kindergarteners begin their transition from the maternelle pedagogy to the elementary pedagogical ways.  This monumental time can be bittersweet for both parents and children alike, and the teachers make this transition as seamless as possible for the children by implementing many activities.

Prior to Spring Break, the Kindergarteners acclimated to the elementary recess with the help of a First Grade Buddy system.  The First Graders took the Kindergarteners under their wing to show them the rules and procedures for having recess on the blacktop and field along with the older children.  Allowing for this transition to be more child-centered, the structure still remains open during certain days of the week for those Kindergarteners who wish to stay and play.

During the month of May the Kindergarteners will have the chance to visit the First Grade classrooms and lunch area.  Here, they will meet this year's First Grade teachers and get to know the areas of the classroom from their First Grade buddies.   They will experience a First Grader's desk and see the books that they will be using next year.  At a later date, the Kindergarten teachers will bring the Kindergarteners into an empty First Grade classroom and conduct a cursive writing lesson.

These activities are all carefully planned by the teachers to ensure that each child is comfortable with moving forward and allow them to experience first hand what it will be like to be in First Grade next year.

PEINTURE MURALE AVEC LES ÉLÈVES DE 4ÈME

8TH GRADE MURAL PROJECT

To finish off the year's art classes with Ms. Emily Loomis, the 8th graders are currently working on a mural project with local artist, Sonja Donahue, who has worked with SDFAS previously on projects for the gala. (Please visit her blog: childrenpaint.wordpress.com).

The students painted en plein air on the picnic tables, and the mural will be a landscape (La Jolla seashore), with technique inspired by a Raoul Dufy painting. When completed, the mural will hang on the wall outside the  auditorium as a legacy to the school from this year's 8th grade graduating class.
