Thank you to the parent volunteers and Yuriko Patino for making this event possible and so fun.
Les CM1 au musée des cartes anciennes à La Jolla
Fourth Grade at the La Jolla Map and Altlas Museum.

On Tuesday, our 4th grade students visited the La Jolla Map and Atlas museum, as part of their French and American Social Studies curriculum. A real unique treat as museum access is limited.
 Greetings! ,

During the month of November, there are many reminders of how we are so grateful for our bounty. At SDFAS, watching happy children playing and

working in harmony every day and enjoying their lives at school is our

greatest reward. We are tremendously thankful for all of you, the parents,

who understand and value our mission.

As we are upon our admissions season for 2015-2016, and opening our doors to new families, we are asking you to spread the good word about SDFAS by passing along the open house invitation.

Open House is November 12, 8:30-10:00 a.m. in the auditorium, for families with children ages 2 to 6, who are entering preschool, kindergarten and first grade.

Again, we wish to THANK YOU for your commitment to SDFAS:  your generosity to the annual fund last month, your volunteer work; and the positive reinforcement you pass along to others about the superior education your child is privileged to receive at SDFAS.

Your enthusiasm is infectious!

Merci.

Virginia Berracasa and Babeth Esterly,

The Admissions Team

Concours national d'orthographe Scripps

Scripps National Spelling Bee

On November 13, 2014, the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition is returning to SDFAS!  All SDFAS Middle School students are welcome to participate.  The event will be held during forum, from 8:30 - 9:30 A.M., and will include three separate "bees" for participants from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  The 8th grade finalist will be awarded the opportunity to compete and represent our school in the town-wide competition, to be held later in the school year.

Teachers handed out study packets for this year's event prior to the October break.  We encourage everyone to participate, and we hope to see you there!

SDFAS Groupe Humanitaire

The SDFAS Humanitarian Group

Throughout the year, the Humanitarian Group organizes events that benefit a variety of charities. The GH participates in educational projects such as "Hunger Month" in November and the "Jog-a-thon" in the spring. All event proceeds are donated to various charities.

In the past, the school has contributed to a variety of organizations such as:

  • Father Joe's - helping homeless or low-income families obtain food and clothes.
  • Hands United - an association that helps children attend school in Burkina Faso.
  • Make A Wish San Diego - an association giving hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Angels Foster Family Network - that helps place infants and toddlers in loving homes throughout San Diego County.

This year the Humanitarian Group members are:

Parents: Xaviera Abitbol, Jacob Johnston and Azita Mahmoudi.

Teachers: Emily Loomis, Nicolas Margarot, Catherine Newnam, Sylvie Jarlov and Diesa Seidel.

Administration: Christian Jarlov.

Please contact any member of the GH if you wish to volunteer!

The GH met earlier this month and planned the following projects for this year:

Books for Africa:

SDFAS will have the opportunity to send books to schools in two African countries: Senegal and the Ivory Coast. A Peace Corp volunteer from San Diego living in a village in Senegal reached out to SDFAS asking for books and a former SDFAS teacher in Ivory Coast put SDFAS in touch with schools in need.

Food Drive:

This month, we will collect food for families in need.

Jog-a-thon:

The school will hold its annual Jog-a-thon to support charities geared towards helping children. SDFAS' students participate in the selection of the charities. The date is February 6, 2015. Last year the school, from PK0 to 8th grade, raised $7,000 distributed amongst three charities.

Library News - Book Fair Results

Thank you dear parents for your book fair purchases. We did very well!

Once again children, parents and teachers enjoyed the superb selection prepared for us by Mrs. Nelson's Book Fair.

A particular thank you to event chairs Elizabeth Kenzelmann and Xaviera Abitbol for getting everything organized, and running smoothly.

Thank you to all our parent volunteers who assisted in the set-up, daily operations, and take-down of the book fair: Brian Altomare, Emilie Ballivy, Vanessa Hamilton, Corinne Legalland, Mary Raeburn, Renata Santos, and Hanan Shehata.

Mrs. Nelson's Book Fairs will contribute 30% of book fair sales to SDFAS. This works out to be $1,658.84 in book fair books and book orders.

I had a great time shopping for the library on the last day of the book fair, and I have already shared with students some of the wonderful new titles.

A special thank you to those among you who bought books for specific teachers: my colleagues and I were thrilled!

Thank you again for your participation!

Anne Ricart,

Librarian.

Livres pour l'Afrique

Books for Africa

SDFAS' Groupe Humanitaire has collected Children's books to send

to a small village in Senegal, Africa.

Rebecca Verlaque, a Peace Corp Volunteer from San Diego is currently working in Khogue, a small village in Senegal. Her main assignment is community health but she is also working on setting up  a small library for children. She contacted SDFAS for help.

The Humanitarian Group organized the collection of books, including text books that SDFAS no longer uses, and Rebecca's parents will come and pick up the books and ship them to Senegal.

La Maison de Sorcière: une surprise très spéciale pour nos élèves.

The Witch House, a Very Special Treat for our Students

SDFAS would like to express its sincere gratitude to the Johnston family (Jacob and Andrea) for their unblievable generosity and time in building a fantastic witch house for our students to explore during Halloween week.

In the auditorium, students had the opportunity to walk through a "real" witch house. They enjoyed trying on the witch's shoes, feeling different potion ingredients and getting spooked by all her belongings.

What a special experience, thank you so much Jacob and Andrea!
