La journée des grands-parents: un grand succès!
 Grandparents Day: A Big Success!

Yesterday, SDFAS opened its doors to grandparents. It was a very special day for all. Grandparents and special friends were able to visit their grandchildren in their classrooms and share their favorite vacation memories. A lot of joy could be felt around campus!
 Greetings! ,

Beyond the language skills and the academic rigor, there are many reasons for choosing an international school like SDFAS. One, of course, is that we are dedicated to giving our children an abundance of opportunities.

Your financial support has always been, and continues to be fundamental to providing these opportunities. We sincerely thank all of you who have helped improve the learning environment at SDFAS; from the library collection to technology, from sports equipment to professional development, the scholarship program, and so much more.

Next week is "Giving Week." We will welcome you on campus each morning and afternoon. Please take this time to support SDFAS at a financial level that is comfortable for you. Your donation to the annual fund matters. Thank you for your trust!

Véronique Rahmati,

Development Officer

School Council

Click  HERE for the minutes of the first school council meeting that was held on October, 6.

Most of you have heard of the School Council, but there are still many questions from our parents on what it is, how it functions and how you can be involved. As outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook 2014-2015 (available on the website), the members of the School Council represent all constituents of the school: students, parents, faculty, and administration. There are three meetings per year and following each meeting, the minutes are posted on the parents section of the school website. Each cycle of the school (Cycle I, Cycle II, Cycle III and Middle School) is represented by a room parent, a teacher, and the coordinator/director of each division: pre-elementary, elementary, and middle school.

For cycle representatives and more information on the function of the School Council, click HERE.

Message de l'association des parents

Message from the PA

The Parents Association would like to welcome all of you to a fun-filled and exciting year at SDFAS!

We would also like to explain what we do and how we can help you get the most out of your experience as a proud parent of a child attending SDFAS.

Without further ado, here is a list of our main tasks and objectives:

We meet regularly in order to plan major SDFAS events
These community events nurture and maintain our vibrant school spirit. Some of these events, such as the La Jolla Christmas parade, also give us the chance to promote the school by getting involved within the larger San Diego community.

We encourage interaction between parents and the administration
Offering several opportunities to volunteer throughout the year, the PA facilitates a working relationship between parents and staff. The Marché de Noël, for example, is a great chance for parents to show their support and participate.

We host Headmaster chats, during which the Headmaster can address parents' concerns in an open and inviting forum.

We organize Parent Socials, which, like all of the above, reinforces our community thereby helping to guarantee that we, and our children, belong to an engaged and fun collective.

To volunteer for upcoming events, or to share an idea you may have for one, please send an email to pa@sdfrenchschool.org.

Wishing you and your lovely children a year filled with sweet memories!

Soleil et santé à la maternelle

Sun Protection Project at SDFAS

Thanks to our school nurse, Genesis, the school recently received a donation of sunscreen samples for our children.

They will be used as a learning tool in the classroom to help educate our students. Samples will be distributed to students in 1st- 8th grades.

This project will also remind them to use sun protection, such as sunscreens, hats, long sleeves and sunglasses.

Dr. Lupton, a dermatologist and parent of the school offers a few reminders:

  • Use UVA/UVB protection and 30-50 SPF.
  • Put sunscreen on your children every morning before school and sunscreen should be reapplied in the afternoon, especially if they are in any sports after school.
  • In general use creams rather than sprays.  The spray formulations do not cover as well and many times it gets lost in the air.

Middle School News

On October 9, SDFAS had the opportunity to welcome a French scientist, Jean-François Briand, who is doing research on genetic mutations and rare diseases -- work which is supported by a joint MLF - Telethon project. He was in town for the Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society conference and, as part of the "1,000 chercheurs dans les écoles" project in France, he offered to give a presentation to our 8th graders.

While the topics are complex, Mr. Briand adapted his presentation to our very attentive 8th graders and included video and other visuals to illustrate the concepts. Mr. Briand's presentation comes at a very fortuitous time, given that our 8th graders are currently studying genetics in Science with Ms. Jacoway, and also participating in a cross-curricular project with Mr. Goncalves (Mr.G), wherein they will debate the ethical questions surrounding genetic manipulation.

Following the debate, the 8th graders will have the opportunity to learn from another guest speaker and longtime member of the SDFAS community, Dr. Diego Miralles.  Dr. Miralles will focus his talk on the ethics of genetic therapy and engineering, and will introduce a new perspective to the students, which will inspire continuous dialogue and learning even after their unit has concluded!
