THE SDFAS BULLETIN BOARD

classified ads

Oftentimes we are asked

to pass along some information to our school community. These notices are not school related, but could appeal to our friends and families. Therefore, we have an electronic bulletin board where you can post notices or look for goods and services. This is similar to a classified ads section of a newspaper or a

"Craig's List" ad.

Your listing is FREE!

You can post a notice if you have something to buy or sell or if you are looking to rent out a house or find a babysitter for the children, etc. The website is

http://sdfascommunity.org

If you would like to post a notice, you will need to request a user name and password. Send your request and text to

A New Science Lab at SDFAS
Un nouveau laboratoire de science à l'école.

Thank you to the 2014 Gala proceeds, the students can now study science in the beautifully renovated lab. Pictured above, are our 6th graders getting ready for a science test.
Le Gamelan à SDFAS

In collaboration with the Center of World Music in La Jolla, students in fifth and seventh grades are learning about the ensemble of instruments from Indonesia: Gamelan, which literally means "instrument" in Indonesian. This "instrument" is composed of an ensemble of percussion pieces, such as metallophones played with mallets, xylophones, and bamboo flutes.
 Greetings! ,

One would think we are in the middle of July with this scorching heat that has invaded our campus this week. The school has made every effort to make the days bearable for our students, keeping them comfortable with fans and air conditioning, and making sure they are protected with sunscreen, hats and plenty of water.

As the communication officer at SDFAS, it is my pleasure to bring the school newsletter, the ÉCHO, to your inbox every two weeks. In the ÉCHO, you will be able to find information about school events. It is our way to communicate with you. If you happen to misplace the newsletter, it is available on the school website.

Last weekend, families enjoyed the back to school picnic, where new families were welcomed by our current families, while enjoying a variety of foods and French music. Soon the school will open its doors for Grandparents Day, which is a great opportunity for our students to show their grandparents and special friends where they spend the majority of their time.

I thank you for taking the time to read the ÉCHO and I do welcome feedback.  Please let me know if there is any information you would like to see more or less of. You can email me at esims@sdfrenchschool.org. We also love to publish our students' achievements outside the school, so please do inform me if your child wins any prizes/awards or performs somewhere.

Thank you and stay cool!

Emily Sims,

Communication Officer

Reminder: Important School Rules

A few important reminders for the safety of all students SDFAS logo

To help with morning traffic, it's extremely important to do a quick drop-off in front of school. If you need to go onto campus or talk with another parent, do not park on the yellow curb in front of the school, please park your car in a parking spot.

Please make an effort to arrive a little early or on time.

After school, all parents, including parents of middle school students, have to go to the gate to pick up their child.

Parents: please stay in the allocated parent area by the front gate. It is very important for the security of our students. It is difficult for staff members to know who the parents are or to determine if there is an unwanted visitor taking the opportunity to walk freely among the students. After drop-off, for the security of your child, please report to the front desk.

Study hall: to avoid disrupting the students at work, parents are requested to wait until the end of study hall to pick up their child or if you want to pick your child up early please go through the office and ask the office manager to call the classroom. Do not walk directly to the classroom. The same rule applies during the school day.

Finally, I have to insist on NO U-turn at Windemere: it is illegal and we wish to remain good neighbors. Please go to the next traffic light to make a U-turn (on Soledad Mountain Road, driving down from the school).

I wish to thank all parents for their support in reinforcing these rules.

Head of School

Sun Safety at the Preschool and Kindergarten

This year, the preschool's project is
"The Sun Project."

Our preschoolers and Kindergarteners are going to learn about Sun Safety and how to protect against the dangers of sun exposure. Jason Lupton, a dermatologist and SDFAS parent, informed the teachers and presented the dangers of sun exposure.

To start this project, the school bought each student an SDFAS hat.

Each student will have his/her own hat, with their name in it and can wear it every day for recess, lunch and transitions. The children will leave the hat at school and they will be washed at each break. As part of this project, children will eventually learn how protect themselves from the sun and learn about the harmful effect of the sun through many different activities.
I would like to remind you how important it is to put sunscreen on your child before you leave for school.

Love the sun, Love your skin more.

SCHOLASTIC FLYERS

Each month, your child brings home two Scholastic flyers, one with books in English, and one with books in French.

Here is the procedure to order from these flyers:

Scholastic USA: sign up at
http://www.scholastic.com/bookclubs and enter the one-time Class Activation Code GRR7D. Once you are registered, you can sign in every month to place your orders. No cash please.

Scholastic Canada: fill out the form at the back of the flyer and write a check for the amount in US dollars (prices in the last column). ORDER BY THE 15thOF THE MONTH. No cash please.

The September Scholastic flyers are late. I'll distribute them to the children as soon as we receive them. You'll be able to place your order till the 15th of October for both September and October flyers.

Every order benefits your children twice: they will enjoy receiving a book of their own, and the school will get free new books to be enjoyed in the library.

Daycare News

Help us welcome our new daycare staff! From left to right:

Anatole Ginsberg was one of the first students at SDFAS and has many memories of its growth and changes over the years. He graduated in 1999 and then completed the IB Diploma at San Diego High School. He attended Vassar College where he received his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Chinese. In 2008, he moved to China, living in Shanghai and Beijing for five years. He worked in Investor Relations and then later taught IB Math at an international high school. In addition to daycare at SDFAS, Anatole also works at the La Jolla Veterinary Hospital and performs improvisational comedy.

Josiane Kei is from Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa) where she studied Business Marketing and Education. She moved to the United Stated in 2008 and after studying nursing, she decided to go back to her first love, which is teaching. She spent 12 years being a teacher and an activity coordinator in Côte d'Ivoire and the United States. "Being around kids, having an impact on their lives is a wonderful experience that beautifies my life. I did not want to miss that experience anymore and that is why I came back to the field. I was looking for a great French school, where diversity, leadership and commitment are the motto. I found the San Diego French-American School, and so many great reviews made me decide to be part of a wonderful journey in which my knowledge and experience will serve the school and the younger generations."

Ken Guerrero was raised in Cavite City, Philippines until he moved to San Francisco at the age of eight. He has a great deal of experience working as either an assistant or tutor at various child development centers and elementary schools. In 2014, he graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.A. in Human Development. While in college, he worked as a conversation leader and helped international students understand the English language and American culture. He speaks the Tagalog language semi-fluently,as well as basic Japanese and Spanish. His hobbies include studying other languages, cooking, and watching basketball and volleyball. He is also part of a beach volleyball club at UCSD, where he plays three times a week.

During morning daycare from 7:30-8 AM, please note that we have a substitute while waiting for the return of Vesna who is on sick leave.

This year we are implementing a new daycare schedule with a variety of activities that change from day to day. Please click on the following link for details.

Résultats des évaluations du programme américain: SAT-10

The Standardized Exam: the SAT-10

Each school year, SDFAS administers various forms of standardized testing to students across a number of grade levels.  Over the course of the past few years, we have been in the process of evaluating the value each standardized testing measure has offered to our students, our teachers, and our families.  Our goal has been to find and administer a standardized testing measure that will effectively and efficiently allow us to gauge students' academic growth, retain and track comparative data from year to year, compare our students' achievement with the achievement of students from other schools, report data clearly and effectively to teachers and parents, help us to identify areas in which students must be offered additional support or enrichment, and provide meaningful feedback on the efficacy with which we are executing our dynamic program.   For the past two years, we have been piloting a relatively well-known standardized exam called the SAT-10 Online, and we feel that this exam has offered us many of the benefits we have been looking for.

Firstly, the new SAT-10 Online exam is much more comprehensive in scope than previous models, and is designed to guide teaching and learning toward high achievement standards, which is very much in line with the SDFAS educational mission.
