We're about to celebrate Mother's Day. But are we celebrating it the right way?
Christine Carter has a love-hate relationship with the day. She explains why Mother's Day pampering might breed disappointment. Instead, she outlines her family's new Mother's Day tradition: A "kindness scavenger hunt."
But don't take Mom for granted! In a new video, Christine explains why boosting Mom's happiness is good for the whole family.
Here are more Greater Good stories on the science of motherhood. We hope they help make your Mother's Day a happy one!

Rep. Tim Ryan's More Mindful Nation
| |
This week, Representative Tim Ryan (D-OH) is planning to introduce legislation to promote social-emotional learning (SEL) in schools nationwide--a sign of the great gains achieved by the SEL movement in recent years. Learn more about SEL in this new piece by Jill Suttie. Also check out Jill's article about the research on SEL's effectiveness. And don't miss Vicki Zakrzewski's provocative piece considering whether SEL is just a luxury for affluent students. For more on Congressman Ryan's work, watch this video of his Greater Good talk about A Mindful Nation, his book exploring how mindfulness can offer an effective--and bipartisan--remedy for problems plaguing our schools, hospitals, veterans, and society at large. |
Teeny Tiny Dogs: Meaningful Life Skills for Kids
|
The GGSC consulted with the Jim Henson Company on a new kids show called Teeny Tiny Dogs--and you can help make it become a hit!
Teeny Tiny Dogs introduces
kids to the concepts we see as vital to a happy, meaningful life--skills like mindfulness, awe, gratitude, hope, altruism, and compassion.
So far, the show's only a rough pilot on Amazon's new TV platform--it's part-cartoon, part-puppet until it gets green-lit. But viewer ratings and comments will determine whether it becomes a real show. So watch and tell Amazon what you think! Read the full viewing instructions here.
From an early viewer: "My son is autistic and does not do that well in social situations. He was watching the first episode and related with the character Butch. He loved the show but the best part is when he came home from school the next day saying that he made new friends and that he was doing what the show said. ... We will keep watching." |
