Children's Programs and Activities

Dear Friends:

We are now well into the summer, with school having let out, hot balmy weather, and hopefully family vacations. Although most of us are trying to slow down during this time, our synagogues and Jewish organizations are still programming exciting and innovative events all summer long. Events including outdoor Shabbat events, picnics, barbeques, and even a free concert by The Gordy's (a wonderful local Hoboken band which includes several members of United Synagogue of Hoboken) are scheduled for the upcoming weeks.

Additionally, with children out of school, the summer might be a great opportunity for you to attend a Friday night or Shabbat morning service as a family together, at one of our area's synagogues. When you visit a synagogue, be sure to introduce yourself to the Rabbi or President, and let them know if you heard about them through HudsonJewish.

Before you know it, we will be gearing up for September, with the start of another school year, and the High Holidays, so be sure to take advantage of these lazy hazy summer days!

As always, if we can be of assistance or if you have an idea for a program or event, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .

Warmly,

Michelle Levine, Chairperson
Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

CHABAD OF HOBOKEN

OPENS NEW LOCATION

By: Adam Weiss

Last Shabbat, June 21, 2014, Chabad of Hoboken held services for the first time in its new location at 80 Park Avenue. (The entrance is on Newark Street, just around the corner from the building's main door).

The result of 6 months of planning and construction, the new Hoboken Chabad Center is designed to hold over 100 people for religious services, communal meals, educational programs, and other events. Chabad, which has been present in Hoboken since 2001 in the persons of Rabbi Moshe Schapiro, his wife Shaindel, and their 7 children, had previously held services and other activities in a variety of locations including the Hoboken Boys and Girls Club and in the Schapiros' apartment.

The move comes at a particularly auspicious time as members of the Chabad community around the world prepare to mark the 20th anniversary of the passing of their leader, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the visionary behind this and the other Chabad centers around the globe. The Rebbe, as his followers called him, passed away on the Hebrew date of Gimmel Tammuz, (this year coinciding with July 1). Chabad of Hoboken joins communities worldwide in planning events to mark this occasion and to commemorate the Rebbe's life.  "The Rebbe was a truly global leader who connected with an infinite variety of people. He saw past people's differences and with his abounding love inspired people everywhere, Jew and non-Jew alike, to grow spiritually and to bring goodness and kindness into G-d's world," says Rabbi Schapiro.

On a recent Sunday-in fact, the day after the new Chabad Center's opening-Rabbi Schapiro and other members of the local Jewish community gathered at the location for an evening minyan so that a family visiting from out of town for a local funeral would have a place to say kaddish together. In a concrete demonstration of Jewish community-wide cooperation and solidarity, Rabbi Schapiro welcomed members of other local synagogue communities who showed up to assist with the minyan, including Rabbi Robert Scheinberg of United Synagogue of Hoboken, the Conservative synagogue located around the block at 115 Park Avenue in Hoboken, and members of Congregation Mount Sinai, the Orthodox synagogue located on Sherman Avenue in nearby Jersey City Heights.

JEWISH DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY BEING CONDUCTED IN HUDSON COUNTY

If you live in Hudson County, New Jersey, please take some time to click on the link below to complete a survey of the Northern New Jersey Jewish community, before June 30.

Why this is important:

This survey is being conducted by the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey. Jewish Federations do this kind of demographic survey of their catchment area from time to time. Surveys like this are a necessary tool for Jewish communal organizations to better serve those we seek to serve.

Because Hoboken and Jersey City are not officially within a Jewish Federation catchment area, to our knowledge we have never been part of such a survey. The fact that the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey is collecting data from Hudson County Jews in this survey is, therefore, a very significant development.

This is why we strongly encourage you to take the time to fill out the survey (it's anonymous and confidential, and you can decline to answer questions you think are intrusive). A good response rate from Hudson County Jews on this survey will demonstrate what many of us know to be true: that our community has a quickly-growing Jewish population, and that Hudson County could benefit from an investment of regional Jewish communal resources to help our community to thrive.

For more information about the survey, see http://www.jewishsurveysays.com/. To take the survey, see http://www.jewishsurveysaysnj.com/n198/. (Please note that if you complete the survey you will also be entered in a sweepstakes to win an iPad.).

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program

HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 300 children in our area, with more spots open for additional children. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, Harold Grinspoon Foundation, and the Violet Zall Hordes Foundation, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Info@HudsonJewish.org
