Children's Programs and Activities

Dear Friends:

Well, I can finally say it - WELCOME TO SUMMER! It's official, from 75 degree days to blooming flowers to children playing outside to the upcoming Shavuot holiday - summer has finally arrived. This is a time of year when we all start to slow down our schedules (hopefully), spend more family time, and try to get out and get moving.

Many of the local synagogues will begin hosting outdoor Shabbat events, which are a wonderful way to welcome Shabbat in the beautiful warm weather, while joining together with others in our community. See this month's listings for more details. On another note, several notable events will be happening this month; Sunday, June 1st The Hoboken Jewish Book Club will meet; Sunday, June 1st Camp Ramah will give a presentation about their Jewish camp program, and on Sunday June 22nd, please participate in the Music Saves Lives Blood Drive with USH.

Finally, it was wonderful to see so many old friends and meet so many new ones at the recent Hoboken Arts Festival on May 4th. We enjoyed speaking with each of you, and your ideas and input are welcomed in helping us improve the service we provide to the Jewish Community of Hudson County. On that note, you may notice that the HJ Jewish Business Network meeting is canceled for this month, as we are seeking a new liaison to head up this program. The program meets once monthly in the morning in Jersey City, and is open to all business owners and professionals seeking to make connections and share business needs/wants. If you are interested in leading this group with our support, please contact Info@HudsonJewish.org for more information.

Wishing everyone a festive Shavuot holiday, this June 3rd-June 5th. Don't forget to participate in the many events, programs, and services being held at synagogues all around town!

As always, if we can be of assistance or if you have an idea for a program or event, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .

Warmly,

Michelle Levine, Chairperson
Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

BAYONNE HADASSAH CHAPTER CLOSING

Bayonne Hadassah has announced that they will be closing down their Chapter after 78 years. The Chapter was organized on March 27, 1936 and had flourished with great pride over many years, building hospitals and camps in Israel with their members' financial support. Their mission was to make Israel the State it is today, and they had many successful programs, campaigns and events over the years. However, due to declining membership and difficulty in recruiting leadership, the Executive Board of the Chapter has made the difficult decision to close the Chapter.

The last meeting will be held on June 10, 2014 at 7:30pm at the Bayonne Jewish Community Center, 1050 Kennedy Boulevard, Bayonne, NJ. All are invited to attend.

Galil creates an environment that grows leaders, while fostering friendships, personal growth, and a strong connection to Israel that lasts a lifetime. The camp includes sports, swimming, arts and crafts, songs, campfires, and special days just like any other camp, but there is an indefinable element of FUN in everything that happens during the summer. Camp Galil is a kibbutz atmosphere focusing on cooperative living, and is a community of young people from all streams of Jewish life. A large majority of the counselors and staff were former campers, clearly demonstrating how campers return year after year, ultimately becoming staff-members. The camp is set in the beautiful fields and forest of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (a short distance from New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia) and serves campers from ages 8 to 16. They have 2, 3, 4, and 7 week options, plus a four day program for current 2nd grades called "Taste of Galil". It's not too early to start thinking about registration for Summer 2014. Camp Galil participates in the One Happy Camper scholarship program, an organization that promotes Jewish summer overnight camp for first time attendees by providing a significant scholarship to those that qualify. For further information and to inquire about summer 2014, please contact the Registrar, Ilana Goldfus at Registrar@campgalil.org , (609) 558-1395 or see their website at www.campgalil.org

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program

HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 300 children in our area, with more spots open for additional children. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, Harold Grinspoon Foundation, and the Violet Zall Hordes Foundation, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Info@HudsonJewish.org
