Dear Friends,
Passover is almost here, and the thought of matzah, wine, and the Four Questions is a pleasant reprieve from the rough winter that is just now ending. The Passover holiday, which begins on the evening of April 14th, is one filled with family, food, and most importantly traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. It is a holiday that encourages participation from grandparents, parents, and even the youngest of children. The hiding of the afikoman, discussion of the ten plagues, and the items on the Seder plate are especially engaging activities for young children, and can be used as an opportunity to involve them even further in this important holiday.
Many of our local Hudson County synagogues will hold community seders, which are open to members and non-members alike. These are a wonderful opportunity to join together as a community group, to share the holiday meal, and each other's customs and traditions. Please check out the Events This Month section for listings of these seders, and RSVP in advance.
On another note, this year Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Ha'Shoah) is on Sunday, April 27th. Three of our County's synagogues, Cong. B'nai Jacob, Temple Beth-El of J. City, and United Synagogue of Hoboken, will gather together for a joint program (see article below). The City of Bayonne will also hold their annual Holocaust Remembrance program inside City Hall on Monday, April 28 (see listing below). As the survivors of the Holocaust dwindle in our area and around the world due to age, it is ever more important for all of us to attend these remembrance programs with our families and loved ones, so that the tragic loss of so many individuals is never forgotten.
Finally, make sure to check out a very interesting article on the Klausenberg-Sanz Hassidic Community in Union County, written by HudsonJewish Founder and Trustee, Adam S. Weiss. You may be surprised to learn of their roots, as well as their current community structure, as they live and thrive right here in Hudson County.
As always, if we can be of assistance or if you have an idea for a program or event, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .
Wishing all of you a happy and healthy Passover holiday!
Warmly,
Michelle Levine, Chairperson Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

UPCOMING COMMUNITY YOM HA'SHOAH 49TH ANNUAL HOLOCAUST OBSERVANCE AT CONG. B'NAI JACOB
FEATURES HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR AND BERLINER, FRED HEYMAN | | |
On Sunday afternoon, April 27th at 3pm, Congregation B'nai Jacob of Jersey City will host the 49th annual community-wide observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Ha'Shoah. The program is jointly sponsored by B'nai Jacob, under the religious leadership of Cantor Marsha Dubrow with Temple Beth-El of Jersey and the United Synagogue of Hoboken. Rabbi Debra Hachen of Temple Beth-El and Rabbi Robert Scheinberg of United Synagogue of Hoboken will co-officiate with Cantor Dubrow.
Along with prayers and readings, a special program of music appropriate to the occasion will be presented by both the USH choir and Cantor Dubrow. The featured speaker for the afternoon's event will be Fred Heyman of Morristown, NJ. Mr. Heyman was born in Berlin, son of Leopold and Gertrud Heymann, and was the only male survivor to the family name at the time of his birth. He resided in Berlin until December 1946, when his family was able to immigrate to the United States. As a young child, he witnessed the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. Mr. Heyman will address the community on details of the daily fear of Nazi atrocities, persecutions, and relentless restrictions placed on the Jewish community by the Gestapo and the Nuremberg Laws. He also lived through heavy Allied bombing of the city. After a number of years of tragic experiences, the family was able to go into hiding by assimilating and moving to an area where nobody recognized their identity. A Catholic family helped them survive during these difficult times. Mr. Heyman will share these first-person survivor experiences as well as others, involving the life threatening experiences he endured when the Russian forces liberated Berlin. Fred Heyman is presently a member of the Holocaust Council of Metro West and the Morris Rubell Holocaust Memorial Foundation which sponsors student trips to the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.
Following Mr. Heyman's presentation, there will be a traditional candle lighting ceremony in memory of the 6 Million Jews and others who were murdered in the Holocaust. The program concludes with the singing of Hatikvah, The Hope. A reception will follow immediately after the program's conclusion. |

OUR HASSIDIC COUSINS IN UNION CITY
By: Adam S. Weiss | | |
(L to R) Rabbi Chaim Kurz & Rabbi Mayer Weiss of Union City with Joshua Bernstein & Adam Weiss of Jersey CIty.
Stroll past the bodegas, restaurants, and small stores along Bergenline Avenue in northern Hudson County and you are apt to wonder whether you are even in the United States-the language of commerce and communication is Spanish, evidenced both by the shop signs and ubiquitous conversations in that language. But wander a few blocks over to New York Avenue and 34th Street in Union City and you will step into an even more surprising world-one where Yiddish predominates: the Klausenburg-Sanz Hassidic community of Union City.
Within the several square blocks surrounding the Mesivta Sanz (in English, the "Sanz Academy"), the imposing 90-year-old building that serves as an educational and religious community center for the Klausenburg-Sanz Hassidim, approximately 120 Jewish families live, pray, study and work. They are guided by their local leader, Rov Shlomo Goldman, also known as the Zvhiller Rebbe, scion of the distinguished Hassidic dynasty from Zvhil (Zvyahel in present-day Ukraine), and son-in-law of the late Grand Rabbi Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam of Klausenburg, (1905-1994), the first "Klausenburger Rebbe." It was Rabbi Halberstam who, following the loss of his wife and eleven children in the Second World War, he established the Klausenburg-Sanz community, which is now largely split between Brooklyn and Netanya, Israel -with a small outpost here in Hudson County. (Klausenburg is the Yiddish/German name for the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca, now in western Romania, where Rabbi Halberstam served as Chief Rabbi; Sanz is the city in Poland where his great-grandfather, Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz (1793-1876), established the Sanz Hassidic dynasty in the early 1800s).
The Klausenburg-Sanz community acquired the Mesivta Sanz building-formerly the Jewish Community Center of North Hudson-in 1968, as the then-existing Jewish community of Union City, West New York, and environs was rapidly moving out to the suburbs. The structure currently houses three distinct educational institutions: the Talmud Torah (elementary school for boys), the Yeshiva Ketana (post-bar mitzvah study for boys aged 14-16), and the Kolel, or post-yeshiva school for men of all ages. The community supports some of the Kolel students with stipends, permitting them to study full-time. In addition, a nearby building-formerly Temple Israel-Emanuel of Union City-today serves as the Bnos Sanz ("Daughters of Sanz") elementary school for girls.
Asked about the greatest challenges of living in such a small enclave, community members are quick to point out the benefits: "We're like one big family," says Rabbi Chaim Kurz, who first arrived in Union City in the 1970s to study at the kolel. Indeed, the community's closeness is palpable on a daily basis-virtually the entire population prays and studies together, welcoming any Jews who discover them to participate. Rabbi Mayer Weiss, who moved to Union City in 1974, notes how much more inconvenient life was in the early days of the Klausenburg-Sanz community here. "In the beginning things were much more difficult . . . finding kosher food, and not being close to our families. But the Rebbe was like a father to everyone. Any disadvantage was made up for."
While the Klausenburg-Sanz community of Union City tends to keep a relatively low profile compared with other Hassidic groups such as Chabad-Lubavitch, they emphatically welcome guests to discover them, especially on Shabbat. Services are held at the Mesivta Sanz, 3400 New York Avenue in Union City. For more information about this fascinating, and welcoming, corner of the Hudson County Jewish community, contact Rabbi Mayer Weiss (201-954-9828). |

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program |
| |
HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Michelle@HudsonJewish.org . |
