Children's Programs and Activities

Dear Friends,

Happy Winter! It's officially winter - not by the date or time of year, but by the snow, the cold weather, and of course the hot cocoa that goes along with it. It is also a wonderful time to enjoy indoor activities that are family and community centered, since we are less busy than during the Spring and Summer when everyone seems to be running from place to place. Enjoy a family game night (think scrabble, boggle, Uno, rummy, or the ever popular candy-land for the little ones), visit a friend and enjoy some coffee and conversation, take time to stop in and check on an elderly relative or neighbor and bring them some homemade treats, or volunteer to serve a meal at one of our area's shelters. All of these things will chase away the cold, and warm your soul!

On another note, thanks to everyone who made the recent Hudson County Festival of Lights at the Bayonne JCC a success. We had wonderful music, provided by the USH choir, along with Rabbi Robert Scheinberg, Rabbi Jacob Benzaquen of Temple Emanu-El, and professionally trained musician Amit Peled (New School for Jazz NY). Children were thrilled with the bouncy house, cotton candy, popcorn, dreidels, and other games and entertainment, while adults enjoyed delicious food from Jerusalem West Restaurant, chatting with friends, socializing, and singing along to a wide variety of songs in English, Hebrew and Yiddish. It was a wonderful community-wide celebration, and we look forward to holding it again next year.

Finally, this month's newsletter includes an article by one of our HudsonJewish Board Members, Burt Gitlin, who shares with us his thoughts on the upcoming remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King. It is an important time to share our thoughts, and discuss the issues that Dr. King was known for bringing to the forefront, so that we may continue working towards a unified community with all of our neighbors.

As always, if we can be of assistance or if you have an idea for a program or event, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Info@HudsonJewish.org . Wishing each and every one of you a very Happy, Healthy, and Successful New Year!

Warmly,

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR - MY THOUGHTS

By Burt Gitlin

As we enter the month of January, with the holidays and New Year behind us, our thoughts turn to MLK weekend. For some of us it is a quiet three-day weekend where we can get out of town for a brief respite. For many of us, we focus on the economic and cultural bridges that have grown since the 1960's, and ask "why celebrate"? Often we either don't know or have forgotten Dr. King's leadership and message, that remain so timely in light of the commonplace violence that has taken place recently, from elementary schools to malls to movie theaters.

What am I doing to honor Dr. King? Much of Dr. King's work was about giving back (Tikun Olam). His involvement was not just contained to the Civil Rights movement; it also included the Vietnam War, and various other world events occurring at that time. Giving back though, is a timeless act that for me as a Jew is integral to my background, upbringing, and ethical makeup. For this reason, this Martin Luther King Day I am making a commitment to help people that are less fortunate than me. In the months ahead I will be documenting where my volunteer efforts take me. I encourage all of us to take advantage of this time to give back, and continue to do so on an ongoing basis. If one thing does not work, try something else, and share it with our online community.

What you discover not only will help the immediate recipient, but may open a door for someone else in our community to "pay it forward".

Sunday, January 19, 4pm: Temple Emanu-El 2014 Broadway Film Festival. Join us for the first movie in Temple Emanu-El's 2014 Broadway Film Festival, showing Brighton Beach Memoirs. Gene Saks directs this film adaptation of Neil Simon's hit play, starring Jonathan Silverman as Eugene, a Jewish teenager sharing very cramped quarters with his loud, nosy and loving family in Depression-era Brooklyn. Both touching and

laugh-out-loud funny, the film costars Blythe Danner and Bob Dishy as Eugene's

parents, with Lisa Waltz as cousin Nora, the source of many of Eugene's

adolescent fantasies and frustrations. Don't miss coffee, cake, and a movie - Come one, come all!

Sunday January 26: Join the USH delegation for Soap Up NJ - a project to combat the human trafficking. Whereas human trafficking -- for laborers and for sexual exploitation -- is a terrible problem every day of the year, experts suggest that the situation can get worse around major sporting events such as the Superbowl to take place in New Jersey in February. Hundreds of volunteers from throughout New Jersey will gather at the Jewish Federation building in Paramus (50 Eisenhower) at 10am for training, then divide up to travel to area hotels and distribute soaps marked with human trafficking information and hotline phone numbers, so it can be accessible to anyone being held against their will around the time of the Superbowl. Sponsored by the Jewish Federations of Metrowest and North Jersey, and SOAP (Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution) and the NJ Coalition Against Human Trafficking.

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program

HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Michelle@HudsonJewish.org
