Dear Friends,
Well, the High Holidays are behind us and Sukkot is upon us. It's a time of year that I particularly enjoy, experiencing a sense of spirituality, community, and togetherness with other Jewish people that I do not necessarily feel as profoundly during the rest of the year as I go about my regular schedule. I spent Yom Kippur visiting several of our local synagogues, including Temple Emanu-El of Bayonne, Temple Beth Am of Bayonne, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City. At each place I was greeted warmly by ushers, board members, and Rabbis alike. My family and I were welcomed and made to feel comfortable, and each service though totally different, was inspiring and innovative. I enjoyed a wonderfully inspiring story by Rabbi Salkin at Beth Am (you should ask him to tell it to you when you see him), watched my children participate in Radiant Yoga at Emanu-El, and heard a heart-rendering Ne'ilah at Beth-El led by Rabbi Hachen and their talented new Cantor. All of them different, yet all wonderful experiences. I strongly encourage you to make the rounds to those and all of our other synagogues (USH, Cong. B'nai Jacob, Mt. Sinai, Chabad, Ohav Zedek, Sons of Israel, Temple Israel of Cliffside Park, Beth Abraham of No. Bergen, Beth El of No. Bergen, & Ahavas Shalom of Newark), so that you can find a place that speaks to you for worship, life cycles, or just a respite from the long week on a Friday Night!
This Sunday from 11am-6pm, HudsonJewish along with many of our fellow Jewish organizations will host a booth at the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival (Washington Street, from Observer Highway to 7th Street, Hoboken). Our booth is normally located on Washington, between 1st & 2nd Streets, but be sure to look for us. Our Board Members and other volunteers will be thrilled to meet you, chat with you for a few minutes, and provide you with loads of information about the many goings-on in Hudson County. Be sure to stop by for a schmooze - we can't wait to meet you!
As always, if we can be of assistance or if you have an idea for a program or event, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .
Warmly,
Michelle Levine, Chairperson Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

INTRODUCTION TO JUDAISM CLASS IN HOBOKEN: A COURSE FOR JEWS, POTENTIAL CONVERTS, AND THE SIMPLY CURIOUS
|
| |
Beginning on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, the annual 24-week Introduction to Judaism Class, sponsored by the New Jersey Rabbinical Assembly, will be held for its tenth year at United Synagogue of Hoboken and taught by the congregation's leader, Rabbi Robert Scheinberg. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The course is run as a service to the community, and provides a warm and engaging environment for students to learn, get to know new friends, and receive top notch instruction by Rabbis who are passionate about the idea of welcoming those who convert and also intermarried families. The course has also been attended by Jewish students who simply want to increase their knowledge base about their own religion, including parents of upcoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah kids who want to be able to grow along with their child. The course includes learning basic Hebrew reading, and classes are oriented toward a wide variety of individuals, including potential Jews by Choice and their spouses/significant others, non-Jews raising Jewish children, and born Jews who wish to learn more about their heritage. It is open to both members and non-members alike. "Teaching the Introduction to Judaism course is one of the most fulfilling things I do as a rabbi", says Rabbi Scheinberg.
Sample topics include: Three Dimensions of Jewish Identity: Behaving, Believing, Belonging, Jewish Perspectives on God, Introduction to the Jewish Calendar, Judaism & Christianity: A Comparative Look; Hanukkah, "December Dilemma" issues, Shabbat -- A Palace in Time, Kashrut -- The Jewish Dietary Laws, Marriage, Divorce & Jewish Perspectives on Sexuality, Contemporary Moral Issues: Jewish Perspectives on Bioethics, The Holocaust and Anti-Semitism, The Land of Israel & Ancient Judaism -- The Biblical and Rabbinic Background, Women and Judaism, The Four Streams of Contemporary Judaism, Judaism in America -- Challenges of the Melting Pot, Jewish Perspectives on Conversion, and Zionism and the Modern State.
"I really enjoyed the class, and certain topics and rituals really resonated with me, in a way that the religion of my birth never did" said one recent participant. Another attendee stated "This course helped me solidify my desire to convert and join the Jewish people as a Jew-by-choice. The course was very helpful in a way that made it more clear in terms of what Judaism is about. It led me on a path that gradually changed my life...to the point that everyone I know notices a positive change in me".
Additional information about the course is available by contacting the Program Administrator, Ellen Nesson at 973-285-9772 or ellen.nesson@gmail.com or www.IntroJudaismNJ.com

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY EDUCATION & ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN PILOT TO BEGIN IN JERSEY CITY |
| |
This November, a Pedestrian Safety Education & Enforcement Campaign pilot will take place in Jersey City. As one of five municipalities participating in a statewide program to pilot and evaluate a pedestrian safety education and enforcement campaign this fall, Jersey City seeks your support. This campaign, led by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority in partnership with the NJ Dept. of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, and the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety, will be branded and feature messages targeted to motorists and pedestrians. It will be positive and focus on safe walking and driving practices.
This extremely worthwhile public service campaign to help protect our fellow members and all residents of Jersey City needs your help in garnering publicity. If you are interested in helping to spread the word (via email, flyers, etc.) in your synagogue, organization, place of employment, etc., please reach out to Andrea Gaines at AGaines@comcast.net . |

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program |
| |
HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org . |
