Dear Friends:
It seems incredible that we are starting to get ready for the High Holidays already, when it seems that summer just got here. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with your spiritual needs, explore the various synagogues and services in our community, and spend time connecting with spiritual leaders and fellow congregants. It is routinely a time when entire families attend services, and as such, it is important that each of us picks the place that is best suited for us to reflect and worship.
Several of our Hudson County synagogues offer free tickets for the High Holiday services (including Cong. B'nai Jacob of J. City, Temple Beth El of J. City, Cong. Sons of Israel of J. City, Cong. Mt. Sinai of J. City, Temple Beth Am of Bayonne, United Synagogue of Hoboken - offers some free of charge services, and for newcomers to the area who have lived here for two years or less, check out www.jfnnj.org/holidaytickets). Be sure to check out the Events section of this newsletter for further information about the different services offered and details about obtaining tickets. Most organizations do require advance reservations (even when there is no charge for tickets) for purposes of planning and security, so be sure to follow directions for confirming your seats. Any of our local Rabbis and/or Leaders will be happy to speak with you in advance to answer questions about services, rituals, and customs, so don't hesitate to reach out to them - their contact information may be found on our website at www.HudsonJewish.org .
On behalf of myself and the entire HudsonJewish Board of Directors, wishing you a wonderful end of summer, and an early Sweet and Successful New Year!
Warmly,
Michelle Levine, Chairperson Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

INNOVATIVE HIGH HOLIDAY PROGRAM AT TEMPLE EMANU-EL OF BAYONNE
|
| |
This Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will bring our community an innovative new program for children (and their grown-ups) at Temple Emanu-El of Bayonne. "Radiant Child Yoga ®", a well established form of yoga for children will now join the customary prayers and services at Temple Emanu-El, under the new leadership of Rabbi Jacob Benzaquen. This is just one of the many new programs that Rabbi Jacob has begun instituting at the Temple.
Overall, studies of the effects of yoga suggest that in adults it may reduce high blood pressure, improve symptoms of heart failure, enhance cardiac rehabilitation, lower cardiovascular risk factors, and helps with chronic low back pain, sleep anxiety, quality of life, and spiritual growth. Yoga can also be excellent training for children and adolescents, both as a form of physical exercise, and for breathing, focus, mindfulness, and stress relief. Many school districts have considered incorporating yoga into their P.E. programs. It is now going to be part of the High Holiday Services in Hudson County for the first time.
In 2013, the White House issued a statement, "Yoga has become a universal language of spiritual exercise in the United States, crossing many lines of religion and cultures". This is clearly what Rabbi Jacob and his team at Temple Emanu-El had in mind when incorporating this innovative and exciting program into the Jewish High Holiday services this year. Be sure to come out for this program on Rosh Hashanah (Thursday, September 5 at 11:15am and Friday, September 6 at 11am), and Yom Kippur (Saturday, September 14, 11am). No tickets or charge to attend - All Are Welcome!

INTRODUCTION TO JUDAISM CLASS IN HOBOKEN: A COURSE FOR JEWS, POTENTIAL CONVERTS, AND THE SIMPLY CURIOUS
|
| |
Beginning on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, the annual 24-week Introduction to Judaism Class, sponsored by the New Jersey Rabbinical Assembly, will be held for its tenth year at United Synagogue of Hoboken and taught by the congregation's leader, Rabbi Robert Scheinberg. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The course is run as a service to the community, and provides a warm and engaging environment for students to learn, get to know new friends, and receive top notch instruction by Rabbis who are passionate about the idea of welcoming those who convert and also intermarried families. The course has also been attended by Jewish students who simply want to increase their knowledge base about their own religion, including parents of upcoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah kids who want to be able to grow along with their child. The course includes learning basic Hebrew reading, and classes are oriented toward a wide variety of individuals, including potential Jews by Choice and their spouses/significant others, non-Jews raising Jewish children, and born Jews who wish to learn more about their heritage. It is open to both members and non-members alike. "Teaching the Introduction to Judaism course is one of the most fulfilling things I do as a rabbi", says Rabbi Scheinberg.
Sample topics include: Three Dimensions of Jewish Identity: Behaving, Believing, Belonging, Jewish Perspectives on God, Introduction to the Jewish Calendar, Judaism & Christianity: A Comparative Look; Hanukkah, "December Dilemma" issues, Shabbat -- A Palace in Time, Kashrut -- The Jewish Dietary Laws, Marriage, Divorce & Jewish Perspectives on Sexuality, Contemporary Moral Issues: Jewish Perspectives on Bioethics, The Holocaust and Anti-Semitism, The Land of Israel & Ancient Judaism -- The Biblical and Rabbinic Background, Women and Judaism, The Four Streams of Contemporary Judaism, Judaism in America -- Challenges of the Melting Pot, Jewish Perspectives on Conversion, and Zionism and the Modern State.
"I really enjoyed the class, and certain topics and rituals really resonated with me, in a way that the religion of my birth never did" said one recent participant. Another attendee stated "This course helped me solidify my desire to convert and join the Jewish people as a Jew-by-choice. The course was very helpful in a way that made it more clear in terms of what Judaism is about. It led me on a path that gradually changed my life...to the point that everyone I know notices a positive change in me".
Additional information about the course is available by contacting the Program Administrator, Ellen Nesson at 973-285-9772 or ellen.nesson@gmail.com or www.IntroJudaismNJ.com

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program |
| |
HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org . |
