Hudson County Kosher Update - Many New Listings!
Dear Friends:

It seems incredible that we are starting to get ready for the High Holidays already, when it seems that summer just got here. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with your spiritual needs, explore the various synagogues and services in our community, and spend time connecting with spiritual leaders and fellow congregants. It is routinely a time when entire families attend services, and as such, it is important that each of us picks the place that is best suited for us to reflect and worship.

Several of our Hudson County synagogues offer free tickets for the High Holiday services (including Cong. B'nai Jacob of J. City, Temple Beth El of J. City, Cong. Sons of Israel of J. City, Cong. Mt. Sinai of J. City, Temple Beth Am of Bayonne, United Synagogue of Hoboken - offers some free of charge services, and for newcomers to the area who have lived here for two years or less, check out www.jfnnj.org/holidaytickets). Be sure to check out the Events section of this newsletter for further information about the different services offered and details about obtaining tickets. Most organizations do require advance reservations (even when there is no charge for tickets) for purposes of planning and security, so be sure to follow directions for confirming your seats. Any of our local Rabbis and/or Leaders will be happy to speak with you in advance to answer questions about services, rituals, and customs, so don't hesitate to reach out to them - their contact information may be found on our website at www.HudsonJewish.org .

On behalf of myself and the entire HudsonJewish Board of Directors, wishing you a wonderful end of summer, and an early Sweet and Successful New Year!

Warmly,

Michelle Levine, Chairperson
Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

TEMPLE EMANU-EL OF BAYONNE

WELCOMES A NEW RABBI

Temple Emanu-El of Bayonne began the process of contemplating its contributions and its resolve to improve and continue to be a source of spiritual and personal enrichment for its congregants and everyone in the community. After a long search, the Temple is proud to announce the appointment of its new spiritual leader, Rabbi Jacob Benzaquen. The Board of Directors of Temple Emanu-El, together with the entire family of congregants, is thrilled to welcome Rabbi Jacob. With bracha (blessings), the new team will work hard to continue the legacy of its former members, and ensure that the synagogue continues to offer meaningful experiences for all involved. The hope is that together we can promote spiritual and personal kinship and renewed interest in our future.

Rabbi Jacob was born in England, and comes from a long line of Spanish Sephardic congregation rabbis. He is concerned about the survival of this work, thus obtaining a certificate as a Green Consultant. He has studied voice at the Belz Cantorial School, an opportunity that allowed him to attain proficiency in classical music and playing classical guitar. His love of music will bring joy and enrich the atmosphere at the Temple's services. His love of writing has resulted in the publishing of his articles by Newsday and Image magazines, as well as local newspapers. His concern for the people of his community led him to receive the Bronx JCC 2000 Rabbinic Achievement Award for Outstanding Community Service, and his love of human fairness motivated him to join many U.S. Jewish and Christian leaders in asking President Obama to free Jonathan Pollard. As part of his innate interest in the welfare of his congregants, the Rabbi has also studied pastoral and grief counseling at New York University.

Rabbi Jacob was ordained by the Kol Yaakov Torah Center in Monsey, New York, receiving an Orthodox Rabbinical Semiha Yore Yadin. He was also ordained in 2006 in a Conservative Rabbinic Ordination by the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, California. He received a Bachelor's Degree (BA) in Psychology from Yeshiva University, and also attended the Jewish Theological Seminary and Academy for Jewish Religion in New York, where he received his certification in Chemical Dependency Counselor for Clergy. The Rabbi last worked as a pulpit rabbi at the Kings Park Jewish Center in Kings Park, NY. His skills involve working with intermarried families, women's discussion groups, initiating programs for the Boy Scouts of America, launching a new Farmer's Market, and being committed to Tikun Olam as his congregation was recognized as one of the top LI Care regional food donors. He has previously been a rabbi in Reno, Nevada, where he revitalized the Hebrew School and partnered with USY's Shabbatons.

Rabbi Jacob's vast experience with all age groups and members of all interests and walks of life is a testament to his ability to create new enthusiasm for this congregation and the Hudson County Jewish community at large in the upcoming New Year. Please feel free to join us at Temple Emanu-El to meet our new Rabbi and be part of the revitalization of this wonderful synagogue in Bayonne, New Jersey.

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program

HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org .
