Dear Friends,

It has been two weeks, one day, and a dozen hours since I received the unbelievable news that shattered our day, our week, and our world. As you all know from my prior email, on Thursday evening, April 18, 2013 Violeta Isackov the beloved fiancé of Adam Weiss, HudsonJewish Founder and community activist, was killed. This was only one week prior to their planned wedding (scheduled for April 28, 2013). As you can imagine, the news was shocking and unbelievable at first to everyone, and then as some time went by it was devastating and sad beyond belief.

The memorial service, held on April 21st in Trevose, PA was attended by more than 500 people, and it took over an hour for everyone to initially enter into the Chapel and give their condolences to Adam, as well as Violeta's two incredible daughters, Corinne and Lauren. Corinne and Lauren each spoke beautifully, and were so poised speaking of their Mother, a feat that even for a grown adult would have been unbearable at this most difficult of times. Rabbi Scheinberg of United Synagogue of Hoboken spoke eloquently about his meetings with Violeta and Adam in preparation for their upcoming wedding just a brief time earlier. "I was so inspired to hear Adam's words about Violeta; how quickly he realized that Violeta would be such a wonderful partner. How Violeta was overflowing with kind, sweet and generous gestures; so beautiful inside and out. How she had a powerful sense of right and wrong, a strong commitment to her values, and how he admired her practicality, industriousness and hard work, how easy-going and even-keeled, and even phlegmatic she was; and how her devotion to Corinne and Lauren knew no bounds, like her love for the rest of her family. How she was a loving and caring mother who loved to laugh and gave the best advice - in these ways emulating her own mother, Liza Isackov, of blessed memory. When I asked Adam what Violeta liked to do in her free time, he responded that she never has free time - or rather, that at every moment she appeared to be working hard, dedicated to her daughters whom she loved more than anything..." These words truly embodied the sentiments I heard from dozens of people that day in the Chapel as they reminisced about this wonderful and remarkable woman. Following the service, the family flew to Israel to fulfill Violeta's wishes of being buried there. They returned from Israel just yesterday after sitting Shiva there amongst Violeta's family.

Although there were many who took the trip to Pennsylvania to both honor and celebrate the life of this wonderfully giving, vivacious, and truly respected woman, many people in our local community have expressed interest in visiting the family upon their return to the United States. Therefore, Adam, Corinne, and Lauren have decided to receive visitors on two dates/locations, as follows;

Sunday, May 5, 2013 - 11am-5pm

94 West Lynford Road

Richboro, PA 18954

Sunday, May 12, 2013 - 11am-5pm

628 Palisade Avenue, Apt. 3

Jersey City, NJ 07307

Although Adam and Violeta had anticipated meeting each others' families and friends under more felicitous circumstances, they hope that by doing so now, we may all honor Violeta's memory while getting to know each other. In addition, a fund is being established for the education and support of Corinne and Lauren. Checks may be made payable to "In trust for Corinne Vainer and Lauren Vainer" and mailed to:

Trust for Corinne Vainer and Lauren Vainer
c/o United Synagogue of Hoboken
115 Park Avenue
Hoboken, NJ 07030

Our thoughts and prayers are with Adam, Corinne and Lauren, as well as their families during this difficult time. May they have many opportunities to celebrate happiness in the years to come, and may Violeta's memory be an inspiration to us all.

On a final and unrelated note, the next Hoboken Arts Festival is upcoming this Sunday, May 5th, from 11am-6pm along Washington Street in Hoboken. As we have done for many years now, HudsonJewish will host a booth at the Festival, and we invite all of you to stop by, meet our volunteers and Board Members, and find out about everything Jewish that is going on in Hudson County.

As always, if you have any questions, ideas, or wish to volunteer with HudsonJewish, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .

Warmly,

TEMPLE BETH AM CELEBRATES RETIREMENT OF RABBI GLADSTONE, AND APPOINTMENT OF RABBI SALKIN

Temple Beth Am of Bayonne announces the retirement of Rabbi Gordon Gladstone, who has been the Rabbi at Beth Am for more than 28 years. Since 1984, Rabbi Gladstone has dedicated his life to doing what was best for the Temple, its congregation, and the entire community that he has served in countless ways. He has been a spiritual and communal leader and the face of Temple Beth Am, and has helped set the vision and direction of the Temple during that time. Rabbi Gladstone will be honored at a Dinner Reception and Shabbat Services at Temple Beth Am on Friday, June 21, 2013, beginning at 5pm with cocktails and dinner, followed by services at 8pm, and all are invited to join us to celebrate this momentous event.

Beth Am is also pleased to announce that Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin has been named their new rabbi. Rabbi Salkin will succeed Rabbi Gordon Gladstone on July 1st. Salkin is a noted rabbi, activist, lecturer and writer, an award winning author/editor of nine books, and is one of American Judaism's most quoted rabbis. He has been called "an activist for Jewish ideas" by his colleagues, and is best known for his book the classic Putting God on the Guest List: How to Reclaim the Spiritual Meaning of Your Child's Bar or Bat Mitzvah. His books have dealt with such subjects as the spirituality of career, masculinity, Israel, biblical topics, and radical views of Jewish history. His most recent book is The Gods are Broken! The Hidden Legacy of Abraham. Rabbi Salkin's articles have appeared in such publications as The Forward, The Wall Street Journal, and Readers' Digest. He has served in leadership positions within the Reform movement, Zionist organizations, and international organizations. He will leave his current job as director of the Anti-Defamation League's New Jersey office to become the Rabbi of Beth Am. "I enjoyed my work at the ADL. Ultimately this was a decision to return to the pulpit, where I can help shape and influence the spiritual direction of a community," Salkin told NJ Jewish News in an April 15 phone interview. Of his new position, Rabbi Salkin has said "The rabbinical position at Temple Beth Am represents a real opportunity to help a Jewish community imagine its future and to deepen itself spiritually, intellectually and communally. It is an honor to be serving and leading this community". He plans to commute to Bayonne from his home in South Orange, NJ.

It is with a great sense of excitement, anticipation, and promise that Temple Beth Am looks forward to Rabbi Salkin leading the congregation. As we move Temple Beth Am forward, we will be building on the legacy of Rabbi Gladstone and his honored predecessors. Please join in wishing Rabbi Gladstone and Rabbi Salkin the very best.

To RSVP for Rabbi Gladstone's retirement dinner reception, please contact the Temple Office at 201-858-2020.

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program

HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We now distribute a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. Partial funding is also sponsoredc by the UJA of Hoboken, but more funds are needed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org .
