Dear Friends,
As I sit at my computer in my fingerless gloves, scarf, and earmuffs (just exaggerating a bit) in this brutally frigid weather, it is hard to remember that only a few short weeks ago it was a balmy 55 degrees, and we were all in spring jackets. It seems that winter is officially upon us, and has come on with a bang. However, just as quickly as this season began, so too will it pass relatively fast and bring with its passing a whole host of wonderful holidays and events in our Community.
As I write this letter to you, Tu B'Shvat, the "Birthday of Trees" is almost here. This is a wonderful holiday, and one which I always enjoy celebrating with my own children as we try new and unusual fruits and as is our tradition, plant a small tree in our backyard or a local park. Not to be outdone, one of my favorite holidays of the year, Purim, follows close behind it. This is a holiday to be enjoyed by young and old, singles and families, and involves costumes, megillah reading, exchanging baskets of food and treats with neighbors and friends, yummy hamentaschen, and an excuse to have a glass (or two) of wine! Now who wouldn't love this holiday? Please be sure to check our calendar for a myriad of events and programs for all ages to celebrate Purim - everything from a classic "Purim Spiel" to a service with costumes and music to a spectacular children's carnival - there is something for everyone. I look forward to seeing all of you at any of the many events in our community during Purim, and invite you to come out and join myself and my family along with my fellow HudsonJewish Board Members in having a wonderful time while meeting other members of our unique community.
As a final note, please do not forget that many members of our community are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. On top of the already tight budgets in effect at most of our local synagogues, this catastrophe has put an even greater strain on organizations, particularly United Synagogue of Hoboken who sustained extensive and very costly damage to their basement including heating and other vital systems. USH will hold their 7th Annual Casino Night on March 9th beginning at 7pm. This event, which I have had the pleasure of attending in previous years, is an incredibly enjoyable evening of casino games, fantastic prizes, and an extensive silent auction. Proceeds will benefit USH and their programs, and your attendance at this function will show your support for our community members in Hoboken.
Thank you as always for participating, helping, and showing your support for all of our Jewish Hudson County organizations. With all of our help, our community will continue to thrive and prosper, rebuilding stronger than ever. As always, if I or my fellow Board Members can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .
Warmly,
Michelle Levine, Chairperson Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

HOBOKEN HADASSAH CHAPTER CLOSES |
| |
On September 9th, 2009 the Hoboken Chapter of Hadassah proudly celebrated as they officially launched their new chapter. This new chapter provided the women of Hoboken, Jersey City, and surrounding areas a place to share in their love and support of Hadassah's mission, raise funds, and enjoy each other's company at events, both educational and social. It allowed these woman to be a part of the more than 330,000 other Members, Associates and supporters who are committed to making a difference in Israel and their community.
Regrettably, we have been advised that the Hoboken Hadassah Chapter is being disbanded due to the lack of an individual to take over leadership of the group from past president, Allison Halpern. In addition to acknowledging Allison's hard work, Hoboken Hadassah wishes to thank Andrea Levy (Communications Leadership), Amy Miller (Book Club), Aliza Willner, and others who have given of their time and efforts in this endeavor. For those who are either life members or annual dues members of Hadassah, there are other chapters in the Northern NJ/NYC area in which they may become active. More information on the NJ chapters can be found at www.hadassah.org/northernnewjersey and NYC information can be found at www.hadassah.org/nyregion . You may also directly contact Loren Roth, Northern NJ Region President, at nnjregion@hadassah.org . The Hadassah Book Club will continue on (with a new name), and all are welcome to join them at future meetings.
We are sad to hear of and announce this closing, and it certainly brings to light the challenges faced in Hudson County, in identifying and cultivating Jewish lay leadership. In the event that you or anyone else is interested in taking an active role in Hudson County Jewish life, we would encourage you to contact Info@HudsonJewish.org , as there are dozens of opportunities available for all skill sets, interests, and availability. |

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program |
| |
HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We are now getting ready to launch a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org . |
