Dear Friends,

While we are all in the midst of Hurricane Sandy (where and how do they come up with these names?!?), I sat down to write this month's letter to you. These are the times when it brings to the forefront of my mind just why and how HudsonJewish came to be. When Adam Weiss, HudsonJewish Founder, noted the declining Jewish population in certain parts of Hudson County yet the growth and influx of new Jewish residents in other parts of the County, he made it his goal to bring together the old and the new, the established and the newly settled. Now we are a vibrant and thriving community, with a monthly e-newsletter that goes out to almost 2000 people. Synagogues are seeing more and more new faces, and attendance is increasing at various programs. Now is the time to meet your neighbor, establish connections, and build bonds, so as to meet the goal of one large Jewish community throughout our County and beyond.

During the next few days, please stay inside, stay safe, and should you need anything, reach out to your synagogue, community center, friends both old and new, and neighbors. As always, if I or my fellow Board Members can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .

Warmly,

Michelle Levine, Chairperson
Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

"HudsonJewish: Connecting Our Community"

BAYONNE JCC ANNUAL EVENING OF TRIBUTE

The Annual Evening of Tribute is the Bayonne JCC's most important fundraising event of the year, and helps to ensure the stability and growth of their many programs and services. At this year's event, to be held on Saturday November 3 at 7pm, the BJCC proudly honors three distinguished representatives of United Way of Hudson County: Dr. Howard Parish, United Way Chairman; Daniel Altilio, United Way President; and Benjamin Dineen, United Way Director of Resource Development and Marketing. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, a short program, and entertainment in the JCC's beautiful ballroom, and is a wonderful way to enjoy a Saturday night while contributing to the future of this important Community Center.

The BJCC is a non-sectarian social service agency that has been serving the needs of the entire Hudson County community since 1952. The JCC provides a wide variety of outstanding social, cultural, recreational, and educational activities for residents of all ages. Everyone from nursery students, school age children, teens, young adults, adults, and seniors will find something to enjoy at the Center. Their programs and services celebrate family, foster health and wall being, create friendships, and expand community relationships. Programs are open to the entire community.

Reservations and journal ads are still available for this event. The event location is the Bayonne JCC, 1050 Kennedy Boulevard, Bayonne. RSVP required in advance. Please contact Carol-Jo Mutterperl at 201-436-6900.

CONGREGATION B'NAI JACOB LAUNCHES

LOX 'N LEARNING 5773

Congregation B'nai Jacob has hit the target on Jewish programming for adults with their highly successful Lox 'N Learning program, a Sunday morning monthly series focusing on Jewish arts and culture. The next program, co-sponsored by HudsonJewish,  takes place on Sunday, December 2, featuring "Pete Rushefsky and His Tsimbl". Come hear renowned tsimbl player and recording artist, Pete Rushefsky, most recently heard on Itzhak Perlman's newly-released CD of Jewish music. This master of one of the original Klezmer instruments of Eastern Europe will share stories about playing with the greats, and perform on this very unique instrument with a beautiful sound. Family Holiday Hanukah Workshop for children ages 2-5 years old will be held in conjunction with this program, and babysitting will be available for 0-2 year olds. Free on-site parking available.

The program series, now entering its 3rd year, is the brainchild of B'nai Jacob's Spiritual Leader, Cantor Marsha Dubrow, Ph.D., who also teaches courses on Jewish arts and culture at NYU. "As a Jewish cultural historian with an emphasis on the arts, I realized that there is a phenomenal richness to the global Jewish experience that functions outside of prayer and ritual and sanctuary activities. It is important for Hudson County Jews to understand our cultural heritage too." That is why this exceptional series is open to everyone in the community. Previous Lox 'N Learning programs have included: Synagogue Architecture Around the World, Yizkor Books: Holocaust Remembrances; The Art of Jewish Papercutting ; Israeli Pop Music; Ladino Language and Music; Growing Up Jewish in Egypt; Accordianist Ben Laden; and prominent Jewish-Indian Artist Siona Benjamin. Future Lox 'N Learning programs will include "Jewish Archeology 101: Coins, Flasks and Oil Lamps"; "Tikkun Olam in Concepts and Practice: From Occupy Wall Street to the World Food Program"; "In the Key of Female: Women and the Cantorate in America"; and "Looking for Love in All the Right Places: Intergenerational Caring". Next spring, B'nai Jacob will sponsor Lox 'N Learning 'On the Road' a Sunday road trip to explore the remnants of these once thriving communities, as well as a visit to the fascinating Wheaton Arts Center, home of New Jersey's world-renowned Glass Museum. On a previous LNL 'On the Road' trip, Hudson County's curious Jews of all ages boarded a bus to America's first Jewish residence, the Israel Gomez House in New York State, and also toured the nearby Kedem Winery where a delicious wine tasting was offered, and the fall foliage was divine.

For only $5.00 to cover the cost of the lox and bagels breakfast, members of the entire Hudson County Jewish community and beyond can schmooze, listen and learn. So, please come on out and join Cong. B'nai Jacob for the entire Lox 'N Learning series. Location: 176 West Side Avenue, Jersey City. For further information, visit www.bnaijacobjc.org

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program

HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We are now getting ready to launch a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org .
