Midweek Blast of Epiphany Light

September 14, 2016

Does God have to Pre-order an iPhone 7?

I wonder how stressful it is to be the person in charge of developing that new piece of technology that will ignite a buzz that will circle the globe?  Not just something that is cool but something that will boost sales and stock prices.  Something that others will call groundbreaking.

A little over a week ago, nerds and techies alike, eagerly watched the unveiling of Apple's newest products, and none were more anticipated than their newest phone. Will it boost sales and return Apple's stock to the dominance it once held?  For some it was new, cool, and worth hundreds of dollars; for others it fell flat.  I would hate to be the person in charge of that.  I can't imagine the pressure.  At one point do we say, "There isn't anything new; it can't go any further."  When are we content to say, "It is enough."  It seems like we are on a treadmill and the speed just keeps increasing with no end in sight.  How long can we keep it up?

Many churches feel the same pressure.  It's not enough to have good music; you need an incredible youth program too.  It's not enough to have a new building; you need smoke-machines, subwoofers, and strobe lights.  It's not enough to serve coffee; it needs to be name brand, fair-trade, non-GMO coffee.  When is it enough?  Isn't the story enough?  A story about a God who loves creation.  A story about a God who isn't distant from us but a God who lived with us and walked with us.  A God who promises that when we take our last breaths here, it's not the end, but that we have a place in eternity with this same God who loves us and is always with us.  When is it enough?

I worry for those of us who are on that treadmill.  The one that keeps speeding up.  The one that has no end in sight.  The house is never fancy enough, the salary is never big enough, and the vacations are never lavish enough.  When is it enough?  Maybe we need to be reminded of what is enough; that God's love is enough.  So stop running and chasing after things that will never live up to the hype and find peace.  Jesus said, "Come to me all you who are weary and I will give you rest." Stop running.  He's talking to you.

Grace and peace, my brothers and sisters,
