Confronting Bullying

A message from Pastor Rick

This past Sunday morning may have begun a firestorm of needful conversation within Epiphany. During the formation hour we came together to confront the reality of teenage suicide. It was the largest gathering for adult formation on a Sunday morning in a long time. That alone is telling us something. Because of our needing to process the information and apply it to our lives and the mission of Epiphany, we agreed to come back this Sunday and continue the conversation.

In the past several days I have heard from several people who wanted to alert me about someone who was crying out for help. I have heard about someone cutting herself, someone posting suicide notes on social media, and someone who is talking about suicide with words like, "Everybody hates me."

Sadly I also have heard more about one of the biggest circumstances that cause our kids to think about taking their own lives - bullying. There is a new movie out, Bully, which our Real Time kids are reviewing and which is very thought provoking. Last year 13,000,000 kids in this country were bullied. Bullying is not only about mercilessly picking on somebody on the school bus; it also includes harassment like pulling a kid's pants down in the lunch room and doing hateful things on social media. This is a different age when cruel people can cowardly hide behind screen names and spew out anything they want without any consequences.

The sad thing is that many of our young people are mimicking adults who sign up for message boards with anonymous screen names and personally attack a coach that disappointed them or an athlete who fails to live up to unrealistic expectations for his beloved college or pro team.

Sunday's Sermon

The title of my sermon is "When All Is Lost." The familiar story of the father who had two sons is perhaps too familiar for us to hear anything new. Then again, maybe the Holy Spirit will surprise us with a powerful message of a God who can find us when all is lost.

Spring Forward!
Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday at
2 AM. Set your clocks ahead one hour Saturday night!

Wednesdays at the Well Tonight
Lenten midweek worship at 7

Our Lenten worship series continues tonight, with the theme "God Is Good: Stories of Transformation." Each Wednesday brings us an Epiphany person to relate his or her own life and spiritual journey with a selected biblical character. Through the trials and victories of biblical people, our Epiphany "preachers" are willing to share and inspire us. Tonight, we hear from Roger Franklin, whose focus will be Nehemiah.  The worship service will be a simple Service of the Word with the Eucharist.

Prior to worship, join us at 6 PM for Epiphany's community meal and, at 6:30, for Imagine Wednesdays

Discussion About Bullying This Sunday, 9:45 AM
Full community encouraged to be a part
Last Sunday's forum on teenage suicide brought forth a topic that we are discovering more and more children are facing: Bullying. This Sunday, we continue a vital discussion of how Epiphany can best reach out and raise up by confronting bullying in our community. The discussion will be led by Pastor Rick; join us in the worship center at 9:45 AM.

This is an important community discussion for everyone -- parents and grandparents, teachers and coaches, friends and neighbors. Please share this opportunity and invite someone to join you.

Session for All Caregivers Monday, 7 PM
Respite time offered by Epiphany
Caregivers ... Need some TLC? Some of us have heavy responsibilities when we have aging parents, a disabled spouse or child, or a terminally ill family member ... to name a few of the life situations of caregivers in our community. Despite our love, the care we provide takes an emotional and physical toll on us. We need a break. We need to talk with those who are experiencing the same things.

Please join the Rev. Landa Larson on Monday, March 11,
7 PM
when caregivers come together to explore and pray.

Hunger Walk 2013 logoWalk in Hunger Walk 2013
Atlanta's Hunger Walk is this Sunday. Consider that more than one in four Georgia children lives in a "food insecure" household -- meaning that they don't always know where they will find their next meal. Lutheran Services of Georgia is a beneficiary of Hunger Walk, granting funds to participating congregations for stocking local food pantries and addressing root causes of hunger. Sign up for this year's Hunger Walk and help alleviate hunger in our area; be sure to register as an LSG participant. You'll find additional information in Epiphany's gathering space.
