Smoother pavements are being noticed

Gary Richards writes a hugely popular column for the San Jose Mercury News called "Roadshow," where he interacts with readers on a number of transportation-related topics.

In his Sept. 30 report, he reprinted letters from readers who were favorably impressed with new pavements being put down in the Bay Area and elsewhere.

"The new asphalt on Interstate 280 through San Mateo is so smooth. No more jarring bumps and it seems to make for a much quieter drive," wrote one reader from Palo Alto. Another reader from Walnut Creek offered: "With all the complaints about the pavement on Interstate 680 and other roads, I thought a BRAVO for improvements was in order. We had occasion to head south to L.A. recently and the improvement -- especially on the 580 feeder after the 680 split and down to the rest area just north of

Westley -- is now a pleasure. We had to take our Sprinter van with its stiff suspension and it meant that we no longer had to say hello to every destroyed slab. There were many sections on I-5 that were also repaved or in progress in Kern County all the way down to the Grapevine. Well done!"

Finally, a reader from Oakland contributed: "Most of us, including myself, like to complain. Today, however, I want to offer a big "thank you" to all those involved in the re-paving, re-lining, pruning and brush clearing of Highway 13 though Oakland. It looks great!"

This just goes to show that people do notice when roads are properly maintained, and certainly notice when they aren't. A tip of the CalAPA hard hat to all who labor to make our roads smoother and safer.

Richards, by the way, has been penning his column for more than 20 years and because of his full-throated support for good roads has been enshrined in the CalAPA "hall of fame" as an honorary member.

Recent smoother-pavement specifications have been years in the making, and are still a work in progress. Click HERE for a previous Asphalt Insider story on the topic.
Calling all porous asphalt pavements

One of the most frequent inquiries we get into the CalAPA offices is for information on porous asphalt pavements. Pavement designers are more intrigued than ever about the potential for porous pavements to give them another arrow in the "green" design quiver to help with storm-water mitigation and to earn LEED credits in projects.

CalAPA has assembled some porous asphalt pavement resources on our website HERE, and have reported on some successful

projects, including a prominent deployment in the parking lot of a Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Modesto. We've even reported on the use of porous asphalt in a fountain meant to demonstrate the concept at a park in Elk Grove in Northern California.

CalAPA is in the process of compiling a list of completed porous asphalt pavement projects in California, and asks readers to let us know about projects for inclusion in the list. Send contributions to info(at)calapa.net . Please include the location, date of installation and other project details, if available.
