 | CalAPA 'Asphalt Pavement 101' class to be held July 13 in San Diego
|
A new class date and location, July 13 in San Diego, has been added to the CalAPA technical training class schedule for the popular half-day seminar, "Asphalt Pavement 101." A previously announced class will also be held July 14 in Cerritos.
The class is a good overview of everything asphalt, touching on how asphalt pavements are designed, constructed and maintained. It is taught by Roger Smith, a former senior materials engineer with Caltrans and the Asphalt Institute, as well as a former executive director of CalAPA. Although the class is just a half-day it is packed with loads of useful information for

contractor and agency paving crews, quality control specialists, lab personnel and others who interact with asphalt pavements. The class will cover pavement structure and terminologies, asphalt binders, aggregates, asphalt mixes, plant operations and mix delivery, paving and rolling, acceptance specifications and testing. Because so much is changing in the world of asphalt pavements, the class is an excellent refresher course for veterans in the industry as well as providing a good overview for those new or just returning to asphalt pavements.
"Asphalt Pavement 101" is a recommended prerequisite for other CalAPA technical classes, such as "Caltrans Section 39 Specifications," "Essentials of Pavement Smoothness" and "Quality HMA Paving."
All class attendees will receive a reference booklet that includes copies of the slide presentation, key acronyms, glossary and other reference items for future use. Attendees will also receive a handsome certificate of completion documenting that they have completed four (4) Professional Development Hours (PDH) of technical instruction. Early-bird registration fees for the classes are $99 for CalAPA members and agency personnel, and $119 for all others. The start time for each of the classes is 8 a.m., and they conclude at noon. For more details and to register for the July 13 class in San Diego, click HERE. To register for the July 14 class in Cerritos, click HERE. CalAPA can also bring technical classes to your location. For more information on hosted CalAPA technical classes, contact Ritha Nhorn of CalAPA at (916) 791-5044. For an on-line calendar of all CalAPA classes and events, click HERE.

 | Goods-movement takes center stage as four Western states seek to eliminate 'friction' on I-10 corridor
| Four western states, including California, are teaming up to help reduce what they call "friction" that slows down the efficient movement of goods along Interstate 10.
The states, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, announced the agreement June 2. Click HERE to read more about it.
In making the announcement, the chiefs of the four state transportation departments on the route noted that commerce flowing on Interstate 10 across the four states helps connect Asia markets to the region via the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach complex. If taken together, the four states would represent the 10th largest economy in the world.
One target of the effort was the multiple commercial vehicle licensing and inspection practices along the route, which makes travel along the route less efficient than it could be. Other areas of possible cooperation and coordination include deployment of technology and best practices.
Efficient movement of goods and services is also prominently featured in the new federal FAST Act surface transportation bill passed last December by Congress.

 | Presidio Parkway project in San Francisco wins national award | The high-profile Presido Parkway Project in San Francisco will be honored later this month with a national public-private partnership award, it was announced. Asphalt was prominently featured in the project, and the NAPA "Young Leaders" group toured the project when it was under construction in 2014.
The National Council for Public-Private Partnerships announced that the Presidio Parkway project would receive its "Infrastructure Project Award" at a ceremony June 28 in Chicago. Click HERE to read the announcement. The project had previously won the 2015 "Project of the Year" award from the California Transportation Foundation.
The $1 billion Presidio Parkway, decades in the planning stages, began construction in 2009 and is scheduled to be completed this year. The main roadway portion of the route was opened to traffic in 2015. The parkway offers sweeping views of San Francisco Bay as it connects the city to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Asphalt's speed-of-construction attributes received worldwide attention as 22,000 tons of asphalt supplied by CalAPA member Syar Industries were used for temporary detours to minimize disruption to traffic, including during an epic, 57-hour demolition and detour weekend closure.
CalAPA and Caltrans District 4 hosted a project tour of the Presidio Parkway project as it neared completion for a group of National Asphalt Pavement Association young leaders on Oct. 21, 2014. An Asphalt Insder story about the project and tour is HERE. Photos from the tour can be found on the CalAPA Facebook Page HERE. The Presidio Parkway webpage is HERE.
