 | Annual CalAPA Membership Directory & Buyer's Guide now hitting mailboxes
|
The annual CalAPA Membership Directory & Buyers' Guide will be hitting mailboxes in the coming days. The handy reference publication, which is an exclusive benefit of CalAPA membership, includes contact information on all members, plus an exhaustive reference section of key people, positions and contact information. It is only available in print format. The guide also includes a popular "Buyer's Guide" section to encourage members to do business with other member firms who support the industry through their dues and participation. The cover photo features a paving operation at Death Valley, one of the lowest and hottest spots in North America, to highlight asphalt's adaptability in many different environments. Special thanks to all members who responded to requests to update their information so that the guide could be as valuable and up-to-date as possible. The Buyer's Guide portion of the directory may be accessed on-line HERE. | Rally planned for May 19 at the state Capitol to demand action on transportation funding
| A broad-based coalition is planning a rally on the south steps of the state Capitol in Sacramento on May 19 at 9:30 a.m. to demand the Legislature and the governor take action on transportation funding.
A press conference will kick off the rally, which will be staged on the N Street side of the Capitol that faces the Department of Transportation building. The event is being organized by the Fix Our Roads coalition, of which CalAPA is a partner.
Those who plan to attend are encouraged to wear hard hats and safety vests to represent the number of construction jobs at stake while the state's road network continues to crumble from neglect and lack of funding.
There are three competing proposals to address the state's longstanding under-investment in its surface transportation system, but so far no agreement between the Legislature and the Brown administration has been reached.
Questions about the rally should be directed to Jon Wainwright at (916) 443-0872. |

 | Tech Term of the Week
| Each week we highlight a word, acronym or other reference commonly used in the asphalt pavement industry in California.
SLAG: The air-cooled, non-metallic byproduct of a blast furnace operation consisting essentially of silicates and alumino-silicates of lime and other bases that is developed simultaneously with iron in a blast furnace. Naturally it is only available in those localities where pig iron is produced. Crushed slag weighs about 80 pounds per cubic foot.
