 | Welcome aboard: Ritha Nhorn
| She's the friendly voice on the phone, or the tireless worker helping out at CalAPA events and training classes. What you don't know is that someday soon she'll be an engineer and, hopefully, working in the asphalt pavement industry.
We're talking about Ritha Nhorn, a part-time administrative

She started out at CalAPA as a temporary fill-in while Office Manager Sophie You was on leave last year, but quickly earned her stripes as a versatile and productive member of the CalAPA team.
In addition to office duties, including helping with accounts-receivable and accounts-payable, she has helped edit the CalAPA Membership Directory, coordinate CalAPA's technical training classes, and is a regular contributor to CalAPA publications, including Asphalt Insider.

 | Giving distress a name
| Everyone wants pavements that ride like new, forever, but the reality is that pavements in California take a pounding, are subject to a wide variety of climactic and traffic conditions, and aren't maintained well enough to anyone's satisfaction.
You don't need to be an engineer to know when pavements are failing, but knowing a little bit about the type of failure can help inform what strategy may be best to remedy the situation.
While libraries have been filled with research about pavement performance and characteristics, sometimes a simple guide can be helpful as well. The Asphalt Institute has published a handy glossary of terms, with photos, that represent many common asphalt pavement distresses that may be encountered out on the roadway. Click HERE to view it.
There are, for example, many different types of cracks, and each is indicative of different things happening to the pavement surface and, more importantly, what may be happening just beneath the surface.
Hopefully if our elected officials get serious about making adequate investments in pavement maintenance, guides like this one will be used less often.

Attendees will develop a general understanding of HMA materials, production, placement and compaction operations. Extra attention will be given to mix placement and compaction. Those who complete the class will be given a certificate representing 7.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). The class fee is $225. The class will include continental breakfast, breaks, lunch and a copy of the Asphalt Institute's highly regarded publication "MS-22 Construction of Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements" manual, a $65 value.
