 | Presentations from pavement smoothness forum now on-line | Caltrans has posted copies of the presentations and other information that was presented in a special HMA Pavement Smoothness Technology Forum held in Sacramento. Click HERE to view and download the documents, which are in PDF format.
The Sept. 28 form, attended by more than 100 industry and
| A vehicle-mounted inertial profiler. | agency representatives, focused on new Caltrans pavement smoothness specifications, as well as new technology and computer software now in use that is designed to more precisely measure ride quality and result in a smoother pavement project.
The forum was co-sponsored by CalAPA as well as AGC, CalCIMA and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
A special half-day class on pavement smoothness is being developed by CalAPA and will be announced soon. It will cover specification changes and terminology, measuring roughness, the use of the Intertial Profiler, ProVAL software, opportunities for ride quality improvement, best practices for smoothness, grinding plans and reasonable expectations. The class will be taught by Mike Robinson, P.E., a consultant and CalAPA associate member. Robinson presented on the topic at the CalAPA Fall Asphalt Pavement Conference & Equipment Expo in Sacramento last month. Click HERE to view a copy of his presentation. Presentations from all CalAPA conferences and technical meetings, 87 at last count, can be found on our Slideshare Page HERE.
Announcements on upcoming dates, times and locations will be published in future editions of the Asphalt Insider.

 | Last chance to take our 1-minute 'better-worse' survey
| It's that time of year again -- time to take our annual "Better-Worse" survey. Click HERE to tell us what you think.
The survey, in its sixth year, is only one question: Do you think 2016 will be better or worse than 2015 for your company or organization? You may add a written comment if you wish.
The results from the non-scientific survey will be featured in an upcoming issue of Asphalt Insider, as well as in the forecast issue of the CalAPA magazine, California Asphalt.

 | Company news: The Graniterock 'RockBlog' has everything from CIR to Steinbeck | A tip of the hard hat goes out to CalAPA member Graniterock for its lively "RockBlog" news portal, which carries reports on everything from project and employee news to customer testimonials.
The most recent issue gives a shout-out to literary giant John Steinbeck, who once worked for the company and inspired a children's book, "Cauliflower Boulevard," by Rose Ann Woolpert. Another report is of a successful Cold In-place Recycling (CIR) project on the Lawrence Expressway. Click HERE to check it out.
And while we're on the subject, we'll give another plug to our 2012 California Asphalt magazine tribute to longtime Graniterock executive Bruce W. Woolpert. Although Bruce is no longer with us, his legacy lives on. You can read it HERE.
Finally, Steinbeck, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "The Grapes of Wrath," "Of Mice and Men," and "East of Eden," had a few choice words to say about asphalt, which he offered up in his 1947 novel "The Wayward Bus." Asphalt pavement, he wrote, "did survive because it offered no stern face to the pounding tires. It gave a little and came back a little. It softened in the summer and hardened in the winter. And gradually all the roads were capped with shining black that looked silver in the distance."

 | Tech Term of the Week
| Each week we highlight a word, acronym or other reference commonly used in the asphalt pavement industry in California.
REFLECTION CRACKING: Cracking that appears on the surface of a pavement above joints and cracks in the underlying pavement layer due to horizontal and vertical movement at these joints and cracks. Reflection cracking is caused by a build-up of strain below the surface layer caused by movement at cracks or joints. These strains, if not alleviated (relieved), cause crack initiation in the surface layer. This crack may then propagate to the surface. The rate is dependent on the physical characteristics and geometric properties of the pavement surface layer.
