 | Tack Coat best practice workshops draw a crowd, including many agency personnel
| CalAPA-sponsored Tack Coat workshops held last week in Sacramento and Fontana proved popular with industry and agency personnel.
Conducted by the Asphalt Institute and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and with the participation of Caltrans, the free half-day workshops were brimming with useful information and tips to make sure owners get the maximum benefit from utilizing

Attendees, including many local and state agency personnel, were exposed to practical tips (be sure the tack is spread evenly, allowed to "break" and don't forget vertical edges when applying tack) as well as discussions about emulsions, blending rates and proper use of tack in paving operations.
The trainers were Bob Humer, senior engineer for the Asphalt Institute, and Jason Dietz, construction and materials engineer for the FHWA.
A helpful resource on the topic can be found in the 2009 Caltrans publication "Tack Coat Guidelines" that can be found HERE. Pictures from the workshops can be viewed on the CalAPA Facebook page HERE.

out, but other classes in the Bay Area will be announced soon.
The curriculum was developed under the guidance of the CalAPA Technical Advisory Committee of pavement experts, and reviewed by Caltrans. The classes cover all major changes to the Caltrans specifications, testing and acceptance as they relate to asphalt pavements, including "Superpave." It is a must-attend for engineers, designers, technicians, estimators, paving contractors, agency personnel and anyone else involved in asphalt pavements. The class was made possible through the generous support of CalAPA members. Our instructor is Paul Curren, P.E., who previously taught this class to more than 500 around the state in 2010 and 2011 to rave reviews. He has years of practical experience working for local agencies and industry. Early registration for the training class is $99 for CalAPA members, $99 for public agency representatives and academia, and $119 for all others. All attendees will receive a handy reference guide for the material being covered in class. Seats are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration must be completed on-line, and payment must be received prior to the day of the class. Keep an eye on the Asphalt Insider newsletter for announcements, or watch our virtual calendar of events. tech meetings and classes HERE. For registration questions or general inquiries contact Ritha Nhorn of CalAPA at (916) 791-5044. For questions about the technical content of the class, contact CalAPA's technical consultant, Rita B. | Take our 1-minute 'better-worse' survey
| It's that time of year again -- time to take our annual "Better-Worse" survey. Click HERE to tell us what you think.
The survey, in its sixth year, is only one question: Do you think 2016 will be better or worse than 2015 for your company or organization? You may add a written comment if you wish.
The results from the non-scientific survey will be featured in an upcoming issue of Asphalt Insider, as well as in the forecast issue of the CalAPA magazine, California Asphalt.
For a story about the results from last year's survey, click HERE.

 | Asphalt burn safety resources
| The presentation on asphalt burn safety, which took place at the CalAPA Fall Asphalt Pavement Conference & Equipment Expo last month in Sacramento, certainly achieved its intended result: raising awareness about the proper way for first responders to handle those who have been burned by hot asphalt.
Barry Gundersen, a safety consultant from New Zealand who put on the presentation, has agreed to return to California next year for an encore performance at the Spring Asphalt Pavement Conference in Ontario. In the meantime, the Asphalt Institute, a CalAPA partner, has just released a DVD on asphalt burn safety titled "Cooling Asphalt Burns." There are also companion printed materials that may be utilized by safety professionals.
To order the DVD and other safety materials, click HERE to visit the Asphalt Institute webpage and click on the "store" link.

 | Tech Term of the Week
| Each week we highlight a word, acronym or other reference commonly used in the asphalt pavement industry in California.
COLD IN-PLACE RECYCLING (CIR): A process in which a portion of an existing bituminous pavement is pulverized or milled, and then the reclaimed material is mixed with rejuvenation oils or emulsions, emulsion or other new binder and, when needed, virgin aggregates (to ensure correct grading). The binder used most often is emulsified asphalt with or without a softening agent. The resultant blend is placed as a base for a subsequent overlay or surface treatment. The reclaimed material can also be mixed with rejuvenation agents without the addition of new binder.
