The class, developed under the guidance of the CalAPA Technical Advisory Committee of pavement experts, and reviewed by Caltrans, covers all major changes to the Caltrans specifications, testing and acceptance as they relate to asphalt pavements, including "Superpave." It is a must for engineers, designers, technicians, paving contractors, agency personnel and anyone else involved in asphalt pavements. The class was made possible through the generous support of CalAPA members.
Our instructor is Paul Curren, P.E., who previously taught this class to more than 500 around the state in 2010 and 2011 to rave reviews. He has years of practical experience working for local agencies and industry. His colorful admonishment, "Do it once, do it right, go home and get paid" has become an oft-repeated catchphrase for the road-building industry in California.
Early registration for the training class is $99 for CalAPA members, $99 for public agency representatives and academia, and $119 for all others. All attendees will receive a handy reference guide for the material being covered in class. Seats are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. | Admirers salute 'Mr. Asphalt,' Carl Monismith of U.C. Berkeley, on the occasion of his birthday

Nobody was counting, but legendary asphalt authority Carl Monismith was nevertheless feted last week in Berkeley on the occasion of his most recent birthday.

Monismith, a longtime U.C. Berkeley professor, is a CalAPA lifetime achievement award winner for his many contributions to the asphalt pavement industry during his storied career. Sources tell Asphalt Insider that he was toasted with a fine Oregon pinot grigio and a finished things off with a decadent slice of chocolate cake.    |

   | Tech Term of the Week
  | Each week we highlight a word, acronym or other reference commonly used in the asphalt pavement industry in California.

PERFORMANCE GRADE (PG) BINDER: A system of categorizing asphalt binders by their physical properties. The PG system uses a common set of tests to measure physical properties of binder that are intended to be related to field performance at extreme temperatures. For example, a binder identified as PG 64-10 must meet performance criteria at an average 7-day maximum pavement design temperature of 64 degrees Celsius and also at a minimum pavement design temperature of minus 10 degrees Celsius.
