 | Highway worker killed on Bay Area freeway; donations sought for his family
| We've said it many times: good roads are worth fighting for, but they're not worth dying for. The road-building industry received yet another grim reminder of this needless life-and-death proposition with the death Sept. 19 of Miguel A. Rodriguez De La Cruz.
Rodriguez De La Cruz, 33, of Oakland, was working on closed westbound lanes of the 580 Freeway near the Lakeshore Avenue exit in Oakland when he was struck by a suspected drunken driver who drove into the freeway closure, according to media reports.
| Miguel Rodriguez De La Cruz | The driver of the vehicle was apprehended by the California Highway Patrol and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.
Rodriguez De La Cruz, a member of Laborers' Local 304, was employed at the time of the crash by CalAPA member O.C. Jones & Sons.
Funeral mass was scheduled for Rodriguez De La Cruz for Monday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church, 1410 100th Ave. in Oakland, with a reception to follow. Burial will be in Mexico.
Memorial funds are being sought to support his family. Click HERE to visit a special "GoFundMe" page established for this purpose.
Donations may also be made to a special Miguel Rodriguez De La Cruz Memorial Fund established through the California Transportation Foundation (CTF). CTF will match, dollar-for-dollar, all donations up to $5,000. Donations by check should be made out to CTF with "Rodriguez De La Cruz Memorial Fund" in the memo area and mailed to CTF at 581 La Sierra Drive, Sacramento, CA 95864. Donations via CTF may also be made on-line with a credit card HERE. When donating on line, be sure to indicate in the "comments" section that the donation should be directed to the Rodriguez De La Cruz Memorial Fund.
Meantime, please drive safely in highway work zones, and encourage all others to do the same. |
