L.A. Tech meeting attendees get an up-close look at Inertial Profiler

Attendees as last week's CalAPA L.A. area Technical Committee meeting got an up-close look at Inertial Profiler technology mounted in a special vehicle.

The new method of measuring pavement smoothness is now
Caltrans engineer Brian Teh, center, gives a demonstration of vehicle-mounted Inertial Profiler technology last week in Fontana.
appearing in Caltrans specifications and replaces the previous method that utilized the California Profilograph.

Under the new system, vehicles driving at freeway speeds can gather pavement smoothness information electronically, improving accuracy and safety.

About 25 industry and agency personnel attended the Sept. 2 meeting, which was held at the Caltrans Southern Regional Lab in Fontana. The Independent Assurance unit of Caltrans brought in Brian Teh, a Caltrans transportation engineer from District 8, to lead the demonstration of the Inertial Profiler equipment.

In addition to inspecting the vehicle, the group witnessed a demonstration of the FHWA's "ProVal" software that provides graphical and statistical analysis of the pavement surface.

Watch the calendar section of the weekly California Asphalt Insider newsletter for announcements of future CalAPA regional technical committee meetings, or contact Tony Grasso at (909) 362-9192.

CalAPA magazine photo is a finalist in AASHTO 'Faces of Transportation' contest

A picture of three members of the California legislature touring a Teichert asphalt plant and quarry, which was featured on the cover of the CalAPA magazine earlier this year, is a finalist in a national "Faces of Transportation" photo contest.

In the picture, which was taken April 23 at Teichert's Perkins facility in Sacramento, Assemblyman Eric Linder, R-Corona, Assembly Minority Leader Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto and Assemblywoman Catharine Baker, R-Dublin, are shown with Teichert's Mike Cunningham in front of the site's towering asphalt storage silos.

The contest, put on by the American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials (AASHTO), is currently accepting votes from the public on the photos. A winner will be announced later this year. To view the AASHTO "Faces of Transportation" website, click HERE.

Teichert was good enough to host another tour of the facility last week for two future engineers, U.C Davis student Hamza Ali Shallwani, CalAPA's summer intern, and Sacramento State University student Ritha Nhorn, who is a part-time CalAPA administrative assistant. Our thanks to Teichert's James Haas for helping mentor the next generation of workers in our industry.

Quote of the Week

"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone."
