 | Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom tours Vulcan asphalt plant & quarry in San Diego
| Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom donned a hard hat and vest to tour an asphalt plant and quarry operated by CalAPA-member Vulcan Materials.
The Aug. 20 tour came as funding to protect and enhance California's transportation infrastructure is a hot topic of debate in Sacramento, including a special session of the Legislature.

Led by a delegation of Vulcan managers and CalAPA board members, Newsom toured the 300-acre Vulcan quarry in Chula Vista, and the state-of-the-art asphalt plant in San Diego. The HMA plant, a six-silo, 400 Tons-Per-Hour facility with Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) capability, was awarded the 2013 Energy Champion-Industrial Award from the local utility, SDG&E.
"The tour with Lt. Gov. Newsom provided an excellent opportunity for our industry to highlight the linkage between our products and the vitality of the state's economy," said Brian Anderson, Vulcan's vice president for property and land development. "Maintaining and improving California's existing infrastructure is key to assuring transportation mobility and sustaining economic growth." Joining Vulcan officials on the tour were CalAPA Board Members John Greenwood with Skanska USA Civil West, the 2015 association chairman; Don L. Daley Jr. with California Commercial Asphalt, Len Nawrocki with Valeri Energy, Don L. Daley III with ATP General Engineering, and CalAPA Deputy Executive Director Tony Grasso.

 | Topic change: Inertial Profiler equipment to be featured at next CalAPA joint L.A.-High Desert Tech meeting Sept. 2 in Fontana
| The next CalAPA joint L.A.-High Desert Technical Committee meeting will feature a demonstration by Caltrans staff of the "Inertial Profiler" equipment to test pavement smoothness. A previously announced demonstration on the department's newly certified Pavement Friction Tester equipment will be postponed to another date.
The meeting will take place Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Caltrans Southern Regional Lab, 13970 Victoria St.in Fontana. All CalAPA members and agency personnel are invited to attend.
Caltrans is transitioning to the Inertial Profiler to measure pavement smoothness and acceptance. The Inertial Profiler provides accurate pavemetn smoothness measurement at highway speeds, collects profiles for both wheel paths at the same time and eliminates the need for lane closures and employee exposure to traffic. Caltrans staff will demonstration the equipment and how it is intended to be used on projects.
The meeting will also feature reports from local and state agencies about pavement projects and issues, and an update from CalAPA Deputy Executive Director Tony Grasso on local and statewide issues the association is following on behalf of the industry. As always, there will be ample time for questions and answers.
For more information and to RSVP for the meeting, click HERE, or contact Grasso at (909) 362-9192.

 | Caltrans, FHWA, industry partner to bring 'HMA Pavement Smoothness Technology Forum' to Sacramento Sept. 28
|
CalAPA is partnering with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and others to bring a special "HMA Pavement Smoothness Technology Forum" to Sacramento on Sept. 28. Associated General Contractors of California (AGC) and the California Construction & Industrial Materials Association (CalCIMA) are also supporting the free event, whichwill take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CHP Conference Room, 601 N. 7th St. in Sacramento. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Although the event is free, space is limited and registration must be completed in advance via the event website. Click HERE to register. The interactive forum is meant to help industry and agency personnel fully understand the new Inertial Profiler (IP) and ProVAL analysis software, which are now being utilized on Caltrans pavement projects. Industry and state experts will be on hand to explain how the system works and to solicit feedback from forum participants on practical applications in the field. "This new technology presents exciting opportunities for improving pavement smoothness and ride quality for motorists," said Sri Balasubramanian, Caltrans Chief of the Office of Asphalt Pavement. "However, we must make sure we are doing everything we can to ensure everyone is getting the most out of these innovations by better understanding how they work." For more information about the forum, contact Don Matthews with CalAPA member Pavement Recycling Systems at (916) 934-4753, or Hamid Moussavi of Caltrans at (916) 274-6175. A link to a flier about the forum is HERE. |

 | Free webinar to unveil new features of 'PaveXpress' simplified on-line pavement design tool set for Sept. 9
| A free webinar to unveil new features of the popular "PaveXpress" on-line pavement design tool will take place Sept. 9. Details about the webinar and a link to the sign-up page is HERE.
PaveXpress is a free, web-based tool that provides pavement engineers and designers a simplified approach to creating and evaluating technically sound pavement structure designs, for both flexible and rigid pavements. The one-hour webinar will take place from 11 a.m. to noon Pacific time.
Using proven AASHTO 93/98 methods, the tool allows users to design roadways, overlays, and parking lots in just minutes. The tool provides easy access of available resources for state-specific design methods. PaveXpress is easy to use and understand, and is accessible on multiple devices providing technically sound pavement structural design analysis. The webinar will cover the product from front to back and how it can be used by pavement designers.
The development of PaveXpress is a joint effort of the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), the Asphalt Institute and state asphalt pavement associations, including CalAPA.
