Practical aspects of using high RAP HMA to be featured presentation at CalAPA Tech Meeting May 27 in San Diego

Effective use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP) will be in the spotlight at the May 27 CalAPA San Diego Technical Committee meeting.

Steven Escobar, president of CalAPA member firm Asphalt Pavement & Recycling Technologies (APART), will deliver the featured
Steve Escobar
presentation titled, "Practical Aspects of Using High-RAP HMA While Meeting End-result Requirements."

The presentation will cover the key points of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP) separations and recycling agents to meet the end-result specification. The City of Los Angeles, for example, has been using high-RAP Mixes for 30 years.

Escobar will also discuss the need for good Quality Control/Quality Assurance programs. The meeting will also feature regular agency reports, and ample time for questions and answers.

The meeting will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the County of San Diego, Fourth Floor Conference Room (B-472), 5510 Overland Ave., San Diego. For more information, click HERE or contact Tony Grasso at (909) 362-9192.

Recent legal rulings regarding public works contracting to be highlighted at June 9 Southern California contractors' dinner

Avoiding pitfalls in bid protests, prevailing wages, statutes of limitations and liens will be a featured topic at the June 9 CalAPA Southern California Contractors' Dinner in Pico Rivera.

Kimberly Wind, a senior associate at the law firm of Hart King, a new CalAPA member that specializes in construction law, will outline recent legal decisions that will have an impact on any paving contractor that performs or is contemplating bidding on public works projects.

Also at the meeting, Executive Director Russell Snyder will give an
Kimberly Wind
overview of the many threats that have swirled around the asphalt pavement industry this year, from onerous regulations to pucker-inducing bills introduced in the state Legislature. The latest update on transportation funding as association activities also will be highlighted.

The evening also will feature local agency updates, technical and insurance "news you can use" and plenty of networking.

The dinner will take place at the Dal Rae restaurant, 9023 E. Washington Blvd. in Pico Rivera. Networking begins at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner program begins at 6:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required and must be completed on-line HERE.

Tell our do-nothing Congress: Don't Let America Dead-end

CalAPA member Astec Industries is helping lead the grass-roots effort to pressure Congress to come up with a long-term transportation funding plan. And they are asking for your help.

The website titled "Don't Let America Dead-end," makes a clear and compelling case why dozens of short-term funding extension for transportation funding are sapping America's economy and putting our vital infrastructure, and global competitiveness, in jeopardy.

"If we don't step up for our companies and our industry, we have no room to complain about the outcome," said Astec Industries President and Chief Executive Officer Ben Brock in a recent letter to fellow executives and leaders in the industry. "Please encourage your employees and vendors to contact Congress. We need to lead."

Click HERE to visit the website and send an automated letter to your elected officials urging them to act. It only takes about 3 minutes. Only persistent pressure will result in action to break the logjam in Washington.
