Treasure-trove of technical information available 24/7 via CalAPA's SlideShare page

Last week, Amir Ghavibazoo, Ph.D, from CalAPA member Twining, Inc., delivered a presentation on rubberized asphalt pavements to about 30 industry and agency representatives at CalAPA's joint meeting of the Los Angeles Area Technical Committee and the High Desert Technical Committee.

For those who couldn't make the March 4 meeting in Fontana, not to worry. His presentation, along with all other technical presentations delivered at CalAPA conferences and technical meetings, are CalAPA SlideShare page available to view and download 24 hours a day via CalAPA's "SlideShare" page. The special website is a user-friendly way for anyone to access important information about asphalt pavements delivered via CalAPA's many educational events.

CalAPA's SlideShare page is rapidly growing in popularity, and is already among the top 1 percent most visited SlideShare sites worldwide, according to the company.

Member spotlight: Graniterock launches leadership academy

There's an imaginary conversation between a CEO and CFO making the rounds of LinkedIn and other social media sites that goes something like this:

CFO: "What happens if we invest in developing our people and then they leave us?"
CEO: "What if we don't, and they stay?"

It's a stark contrast to a common approach to workforce development Graniterock Logo in the construction industry, summed up ruefully by an industry executive at a recent conference: "We just steal from each other."

CalAPA member Graniterock clearly subscribes to the former, more sustainable business strategy, as evidenced by the recent report in the company's "Rock Blog" website.

The company has put together a two-day "Working Together" leadership class for its employees that stresses the importance of teams and the role of leaders in creating a successful business environment. Each class is attended by about 24 Graniterock employees, who are nominated by their managers. The company goal is to eventually put all Graniterock employees through the training.

Diverse program for Spring Asphalt Pavement Conference & Equipment Expo April 15-16 in Ontario

A diverse array of subjects -- from funding, best-practices, research, specifications and more -- is on tap at the CalAPA Spring Asphalt Pavement Conference & Equipment Expo, to be held April 15-16 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. Click HERE to visit the conference website.

Gallegos will be one of the featured speakers at the conference, which will be packed with technical and practical information on asphalt pavement research, pavement design, placement, testing and acceptance, as well as funding projections and other issues of interest to pavement professionals. The conference will also feature dozens of vendor booths, a gala reception and an outdoor equipment expo where the latest in construction equipment will be on display. Previous conferences have been attended by more than 200 construction industry professionals and local, state and federal public works officials.

Comment period set for California Transportation Plan 2040

Public comments are being sought for the latest version of the California Transportation Plan, a self-described blueprint for transportation planning and greenhouse gas reduction through 2040. Click HERE to learn more.

The public review and comment period is open until April 17.

According to the CTP 2040 website, "The California Transportation Plan (CTP) provides a long-range policy framework to meet our future mobility needs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The CTP defines goals, performance-based policies, and strategies to achieve our collective vision for California's future statewide, integrated, multi-modal transportation system. The plan envisions a sustainable system that improves mobility and enhances our quality of life."

 

Members in the news: Vulcan's Anderson named vice chair of state mining board
Brian Anderson with CalAPA-member Vulcan Materials has been named vice chairman of the State Mining & Geology Board.

As was reported in the Feb. 9 issue of "Asphalt Insider, Gov. Jerry Brown reappointed Anderson to the board, which represents the

state's interest in the development, utilization and conservation of mineral resources. Anderson is vice president of property permitting and environment for Vulcan.

"It's an honor to serve as Vice Chairman of the State Mining & Geology Board," Anderson told Asphalt Insider. "I look forward to working collaboratively with Chairman Gideon Kracov, Executive Officer Stephen Testa, and the Board in furthering our mission and objectives."
