 | CalAPA Board of Directors approves 'Code of Ethics' as guiding principles
|
The California Asphalt Pavement Association Board of Directors has approved a Code of Ethics in support of the association's mission to provide leadership and elevate the industry. The guiding principles, similar to what has been adopted by the National Asphalt Pavement Association and other state asphalt associations, is intended to underscore the association's commitment to fairness, honesty and integrity on the part of member companies in all dealings with public and private owners, stakeholders, customers and others. Click HERE to read it. The action was taken at the association's annual meeting Jan. 15 in Los Angeles. Incoming association Chairman John Greenwood with Skanska USA noted that ethics is an important core value of his and other companies in the industry, and that it seemed fitting for the association to also adopt some basic principles that help articulate the important role ethical behavior plays in developing essential business relationships and establishing trust and credibility. The association represents asphalt producers, refiners, paving contractors and others that make up the asphalt pavement industry in California. The association receives inquiries throughout the year by by those seeking referrals for competent and trustworthy firms. The association maintains an on-line "Buyer's Guide" that lists member firms by specialty. Click HERE to view it. "Honesty is our guiding business policy," the Code of Ethics states. "High standards of design, inspection, and construction are prerequisites to long life, safety, and satisfactory performance. We will build these qualities into Hot Mix Asphalt pavements insofar
as engineering design and inspection will permit." For more information about CalAPA, call (916) 791-5044, or click HERE to visit the CalAPA membership page on the association's website. |

 | 'Fix the roads' video goes viral
| A short but powerful promotional video produced by advocacy group Transportation California has a simple message for elected officials, policy-makers and others: "Fix the Roads." Click HERE to watch it.
The 30-second video portrays a carefree family driving along while enjoying a fast-food meal of burgers and drinks when an encounter with a single pothole creates a chain reaction that must be seen to be appreciated. Sadly, deferred maintenance guarantees that scenes like this are played out across California roads and freeways every day.
The video is already making the rounds of social media and has received positive notices for its creativity and impact.
The message in the video is clear: it's time for elected officials at the local, state and federal level to come together to develop a long-term, sustainable way to pay for upkeep of our crumbling pavement network.

 | Tech Report: Caltrans assembles the latest information on 'Intelligent Compaction' on special web page
| The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has created a special "Intelligent Compaction" website to assemble the latest information on the emerging asphalt paving technology. Click HERE to view the website.
Intelligent Compaction is a term coined to describe various technologies intended to assist paving crews in achieving optimum

Achieving targeted compaction and air voids during paving is linked to enhanced durability of asphalt pavements.
The effort is being championed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) under its "Every Day Counts" initiative. Caltrans and CalAPA have partnered with the FHWA on demonstration projects and other research to understand the practical applications of the new technology.
The Caltrans "Intelligent Compaction" website includes the latest specifications, design guidelines, list of projects, frequently asked questions and more. For more information about the page, contact Ebi Fini of Caltrans at (916) 227-5391.

 | CalAPA to sponsor booth at California Chip Seal event Feb. 4-5 in City of Industry | CalAPA will be sponsoring a booth at the upcoming conference of the California Chip Seal Association (CCSA) Feb. 4-5 in the City of Industry. Click HERE to learn more about the event.
The theme of the conference is "A little Goes a Long Way," and is in keeping with the pavement preservation principle of performing lower-cost maintenance treatments on pavements to avoid major rehabilitation later.
CalAPA Deputy Executive Director Tony Grasso will staff the CalAPA booth at the event and share information on thin-lift asphalt pavement overlays as a pavement preservation strategy.
The CCSA has partnered with CalAPA on a number of initiatives, including collaborating on providing input to Caltrans and other agencies on pavement specifications and construction best-practices. The CCSA and CalAPA also joined to voice concern about federal guidance on pavement preservation strategies and how they may be impacted by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A special report on the issue was featured in last year's Pavement Preservation issue of CalAPA's official magazine, California Asphalt. You can view a digital copy of the issue HERE.
