Participants are being sought to attend the first meeting of a Caltrans-industry Asphalt Binder Crumb Rubber Verification Subtask Group, which is meeting under the auspices of the Rock Products Committee's Asphalt Task Group.

The first meeting will take place Wednesday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the "Summit" Training Room adjacent to the offices at Granite Construction, 4001 Bradshaw Road in Sacramento.  Future meetings may alternate between Northern California and Southern California locations to enable the widest possible participation.

Members in the news: Stars of tomorrow can hone their skills thanks to O.C. Jones' volunteer work on Oakland field of dreams

With the Major League Baseball season at its midpoint, it begs the question: how did all those players develop the skills necessary to pitch, field and hit at the major league level?

For CalAPA paving contractor O.C. Jones & Sons, a local ball field in
Neighborhood youth turn out for the re-dedication of an Oakland ball field.
Oakland is one of those special places. The field was showing its age, however, so the Northern California paving contractor stepped in with other community groups to refurbish the facility.

Click HERE to watch a brief video of the re-dedication ceremonies of DeFemery Park in Oakland and some of the many youngsters, present and future, who will benefit.

The park project was just one of many "Volunteer Days" projects undertaken by the contractor to give back to the local community, according to Marketing Director Jennifer Seabay of O.C. Jones, which recently celebrated its 90th anniversary.

Of the company's Volunteer Days, she said "They are a lot of fun. A lot of work, but a lot of fun."

Learn more about the company HERE. And when you see one of their distinctive trucks on the road, tip your hardhat -- they're looking pretty good for 90.

Industry, agency leaders welcome Tony Grasso to CalAPA
If Tony Grasso was looking a little uncomfortable, it was understandable. After spending most of his career pushing others into the limelight, the new CalAPA Deputy Executive Director was overwhelmed by the warm welcome extended to him last week.

Grasso, who began work for the association July 1 and will be based in Southern
Grasso (left) and Kempton.
California, got a chance to meet CalAPA members in Northern California on Thursday during an office Open House, and also attended the joint Caltrans-industry Rock Products Committee at the Caltrans Translab in Sacramento.

Among those extending congratulations to Grasso were former Caltrans director and current Transportation California head Will Kempton, and the Caltrans trio that leads the Rock Products Committee, which reviews and updates Caltrans specifications, test methods and other procedures.

Look for additional pictures to be posted on the CalAPA Facebook Page, as well as images from the association's sold-out "Day at the Races" last weekend in Del Mar, where Southern California members of CalAPA got to meet Grasso in a festive setting.

Grasso (third from left) meets last week with Caltrans Rock Products Committee co-chairs (L-R) John Stayton, Phil Stolarski and Amarjeet Benipal.
