CalAPA installs officers, honors longtime leaders at annual dinner in Los Angeles

California's asphalt pavement industry took time out last week to remember and recognize those who have contributed greatly to the success of the industry while looking ahead to the challenges expected in 2014.

The association's annual dinner at the elegant Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles Jan. 16 featured a keynote speech by Will Kempton, former Caltrans and Orange County Transportation Authority chief who is now at the helm of Transportation California, an advocacy group.

The association also installed its leadership for 2014, and inducted
Will Kempton, John Holliday, Ron Stickel and Russell Snyder (L-R).
two new members of its hall of fame: Ron Stickel with Teichert Aggregates, inducted as a "Life Member," and Ladd Stephenson with Syar Industries, honored as an "Alumni Member." Jeff Reed with George Reed Inc. was presented with a special plaque for his service to the association as outgoing chairman. Current life members Scott Lovejoy, Juan Forster and Carlos Hernandez were on hand to congratulate the new hall of fame members. Jim St. Martin led a poignant moment of silence to remember those close to the industry who passed away in 2013.

The officers for 2014 that were installed at the dinner included
Will Kempton, John Holliday, Ladd Stephenson and Russell Snyder (L-R).
Chairman John Holliday with Holliday Rock, Vice Chairman Alan French with DeSilva Gates Materials, Treasurer Scott Bottomley with Blue Diamond/Sully-Miller, Secretary Bill Darnell with Valero Marketing & Supply, and Immediate Past Chairman Jeff Reed with George Reed inc. Also on the CalAPA Executive Committee for 2014 are Don L Daley Jr. with California Commercial Asphalt, Marc Mitchell with Paramount Petroleum, John Greenwood with Skanska USA West and Michael Murray with Vulcan Materials.

The sponsors for the event were Akzo Nobel, Alta Environmental, Blue Diamond Materials, Butler-Justice Inc., California Commercial Asphalt, LLC, CRM Co., Inc., Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions, Inc., Holliday Rock, Nixon-Egli Equipment, Paramount Petroleum Corporation, Skanska Civil USA West, Telfer Companies, Valero Marketing & Supply Co., Vulcan Materials, Western Division and Volvo Construction Equipment & Services.

CalAPA recognizes regional Caltrans office in Redding with 'Pavement Pioneer' award

The Caltrans regional office in Redding was recognized last week with a "Pavement Pioneer" award by the Asphalt Pavement Alliance for the innovative long-life asphalt pavement projects recently constructed on Interstate 5 in the North State.

CalAPA Executive Director Russell Snyder presented a special plaque and poster of the magazine article that received national attention, including in "Better Roads" magazine.

Caltrans District 2 Director John Bulinski accepted the award on behalf of the district at a district all-employee meeting at a Redding elementary school auditorium.

The award was first announced Oct. 24 at the fifth annual CalAPA Fall Asphalt Pavement Conference in Sacramento. Mike Acott, president of the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), presented the award on behalf of the Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA), a national organization supported by NAPA, the Asphalt Institute, and state asphalt pavement associations, including CalAPA. Caltrans District 2 was the lead in the construction of the projects that were recognized, leading to the local ceremony last week.

The Pavement Pioneer award recognizes the department's headquarters Pavement branch and the regional office in Redding for their work to deliver two long-life asphalt pavement projects. Long-life asphalt pavement, also known as Perpetual Pavement, is a special asphalt pavement design methodology characterized by a deeper base that has been shown to last for decades with only minimal maintenance to the surface layer.

"For the past 12 years, the Perpetual Pavement Award program has recognized agencies for existing pavements that have continued to perform well beyond 40, 50, 60 years. But Caltrans is building pavements today that will win a Perpetual Pavement Award in future decades," said Mike Kvach, Executive Director of the Asphalt Pavement Alliance, at the time of the announcement.

Generally pavements must be in place for more than 30 years to receive an APA Perpetual Pavement Award, but CalAPA and the APA honored Caltrans for the way it moved forward aggressively with the durable pavement strategy not only on the Interstate 5 projects but also on Interstate 710 in Los Angeles County and Interstate 80 between San Francisco and Sacramento.

The first project, valued at $17.5 million, spanned a stretch of I-5 in Siskiyou County near the community of Weed. The second project, valued at $31 million, covered a 15.5 mile stretch of I-5 near Red Bluff. The projects were constructed in 2012 and 2013. To read an on-line version of the "Better Roads" article on the I-5 long-life asphalt pavement projects, click HERE.

In presenting the award to the District 2 team, Snyder praised Caltrans for the cooperative effort that it took to build the projects within a tight deadline while blazing new trails with materials design and testing.
