Lorraine Brugh Transitions

For many of us, the transition from May to June is huge. Lots of endings: final rehearsals, services, performance, good-byes, Godspeeds, Confirmations and graduations. Once the air clears from this activity, the new time can yield a space for transition.  It might just be time to read a good book, or work in the garden. It might be time to transition to a new position, to retirement, or to some time alone. Transitions are a time in between, a liminal time, a created space to create and recreate.

One of those transitions, both for me and for ALCM, is the transition this summer of ALCM's presidency. In its wisdom, ALCM has built into this office a time of transition. Anne Krentz Organ will officially assume the presidency at this summer's biennial conference, but has served on the executive board these past 2 years a president-elect. While I finish my presidency officially at the conference, I remain on the board for another year as past president. I have no doubt that there will be a smooth transition into Anne's presidency, and our system facilitates that. The gifts that Anne brings - her buoyant spirit, her love of composition, and her attention to detail - will serve her well in this role.

I am grateful for the time I have served as president.  I have enjoyed writing, here and in CrossAccent, about the things I find important in this work that we do. I have grown while president in encouraging new leadership, and in finding new partnerships. ALCM is a network of folks who care about each other and the church's worship life, and is knit together through music. I thank you for this opportunity to serve as we together transition into new leadership.

Peace,
Lorraine Brugh
ALCM President

Dear ALCM Friends and Colleagues,

God Is Here! As we know, God is everywhere...but our "here," at least from June 30-July 3, is Valparaiso University, the site of the ALCM biennial conference, "God Is Here: Worship in a Wireless World".

Technology is both bringing us together and setting us apart into our own virtual worlds. What does this mean for flesh-and-blood communities? For worship? For choirs?

We will discuss those questions, raise many more, and be our own flesh-and-blood community for four days. Along the way we will sing, pray, listen, learn, challenge (and be challenged), grow, and celebrate our one-ness is Christ; we will share our stories, and hear old stories in new ways; and we will raise our voices together in praise to God!

If you are still waiting to register, now is the time! You know where to go - www.alcm.org.

Indiana Dunes Tourism VU is ready for you, and so is the planning team, so safe travels to all, and I look forward to greeting you in Valpo on June 30!

May God bless our time together,
Julie Grindle
Conference Chair

Ruth and Paul Manz Organ Scholarship

Organ students are encouraged to apply for the 2013 Ruth and Paul Manz Organ Scholarship. This scholarship was established by Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota, to honor the contributions of both Paul and Ruth Manz to the congregation over the 37 years of their service there.

This annual scholarship is a testimony to the witness of Paul and Ruth Manz to Jesus Christ through the ministry of music and many other expressions of their faith and commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church. The scholarship is intended to be an encouragement to organ students who are preparing for careers as church musicians. The winner will receive $3,000.00.
