Promise Awards

Promise Award Recipients

Tuesday night, March 5th, over 110 people gathered at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek to honor this year's Promise Award recipients. The evening was full of laughter and energy, as well as tears. Since 1992, Rainbow Days has recognized over 200 extraordinary individuals and organizations who have demonstrated an on-going commitment to furthering the mission of Rainbow Days with our special Promise Award.

We take great delight in honoring these recipients who have given selflessly of their time, talent and resources to make sure the 15,000 children served annually by Rainbow Days have a healthy and promising future. These recipients and our other volunteers amassed over 5,330 hours of service, which equates to a dollar value of $116,151, just in 2012! As you can tell, our volunteers mean so much to the success of Rainbow Days. Congratulations to this year's Promise Award recipients!

Art with a Heart - Dallas Children's Theatre

Children from Union Gospel Mission's Center of Hope enjoyed a fun day filled with giggles, laughter and fun on February 2nd.   The day began with lunch donated by Mooyah Burgers, Park Cities.    Drew and his staff treated the children with burger cards so they could "design" their own burger anyway they wanted.

What a treat for these children that have so few choices in their lives.  After lunch the children were given a tour of the Rainbow Day's offices where their favorite part was riding the elevator.  A surprise waiting for them in the Rainbow Days conference room were blankets for each child and birthday boxes for those celebrating their birthday all donated by Prince of Peace Catholic Community.  The day continued when the children were able to see a beloved storybook come alive, "Goodnight Moon" at the Dallas Children's Theater with tickets donated by Texas Instruments.  To sum up how the experience rated, a child remarked, "Can we do all this again tomorrow?"  A special thank-you to Drew Hollingworth and his staff at Mooyah Park Cities, 6713 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225, Prince of Peace Catholic Community, and Texas Instruments for making special memories for Rainbow Days' children.

Day of Wonderment at Perot Museum

Forty-six children from Reconciliation Outreach were selected to participate in an adventurous and fun filled day at the Perot Museum. Helping to provide a day of learning and wonderment were students from Texas A&M who were participating in the MSC Spencer Leadership Conference in Dallas. The Conference provides a unique opportunity for college sophomores to enhance personal and public leadership skills in the pursuit of lifelong excellence in diverse environments. Each child was paired with a "buddy" for the day as the students encouraged, mentored and shared about college life to inspire higher learning.

The Perot museum was a big hit inspiring curiosity as the children and Aggies amazed their brains with hands-on learning experiences.  The group headed to Infusion Church in Oak Cliff for lunch with their buddies and walked into a festive party setting with balloons and decorations provided by Rainbow Days' new auxiliary board. After lunch, Samantha Santiago, the MSC lead Director of the conference directed the children in an activity about setting goals and dreams for their future and the steps in how to achieve them.  The focus of the activity was to emphasis the importance of taking education seriously and how that will set them on the path to achieve their life goals.  As the day came to a close both groups said goodbyes with a special closing.  The Aggies taught the children their fight song and yells and the children taught their buddies their Rainbow Days' group closing with the focus on the major message, 'I believe I have a purpose'.

A big thank-you to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and their wonderful staff-Steve Hinkley Vice President of Programs, Jean Melton, Sales Coordinator and Karin Foronda, Programs Project Manager, Infusion Church Pastor Jacob Rodriquez his wife Rebecca and Tony Sotelo who donated space for lunch and the afternoon activities, Spencer Leadership delegates and A&M students, and the Rainbow Days Auxiliary Board all who provided a day filled with wonder, excitement, bonding and learning.
AuxiliaryAuxiliary

On Saturday, March 23rd, 12 Auxiliary Members gathered at Infusion Church to help set up, decorate and serve lunch to over 100 homeless children and their "buddy for the day," a college student from Texas A&M.  After lunch, the auxiliary group helped make the day extra special by providing behind the scenes assistance to the children could have a framed picture of their mentor taken earlier in the day at the Perot Museum and provided a friendship bracelet as a memory of their new friend.  The day was full of happiness, learning and bonding, all of which helped create memories that will last a life time.  To learn more about Rainbow Days' Auxiliary, please contact Emily Candee 214-887-0726 or click to download the Auxiliary Fact Sheet.
Mission Moment

The school counselor met Marvin at the door as soon as he arrived and told him someone was going to be very happy to see him. Curious, Marvin walked into the Counselor's office to facilitate group with the ten third graders he met with every Thursday morning. As soon as Marvin got through the door, Ronnie stood up and said, "Marvin! You're here! I've got big problems and I need to talk. Can we get to it?" Marvin smiled, sat down with the kids and pulled out his Sunshine and Cloud. He handed them to Ronnie and said, "By all means, let's do it." Ronnie held up the cloud and said, "My cloud is that my dad got arrested last Saturday. He's going to prison again and he's barely been home two months." Marvin looked empathetically at Ronnie. He was a good kid facing tough circumstances. "Do you have a sunshine, Ronnie?" Ronnie was quick to respond, "My sunshine is that I have safe people in my life who care about me and listen to what I have to say. I love my Dad, but I'm not ever going to go to prison. I'm going to make healthy choices and do what's right. You taught me that."  Marvin fist bumped Ronnie and told him he was proud of him.
