FROM THE NSCA PRESIDENT: Omnibus Bill in the works
|
As you may have heard there is an omnibus budget bill that is very likely to pass in Congress and be signed by the President. The table below shows the current numbers suggested for CNCS and Senior Corps. The good news is the budget calls for a 2.7% increase for all Senior Corps programs (above the previous sequester numbers). This is good news, but it does not reverse all the losses from sequestration. For now, we want to thank our congressional representatives for working together to achieve this budget. Beyond that, we still need to communicate with our Senators and Representatives about the importance of Senior Corps. We all should continue to build relationships with our members of Congress and urge continued support for Senior Corps funding. Please ask your friends and families to join you in rallying around volunteer opportunities for all Americans. A written letter is effective, but you can email from home if this is more convenient. You can find your representative at: http://www.house.gov/ or your Senator at: http://www.senate.gov/

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Mayor's Day of Recognition to return on April 1, 2014
On April 9, 2013, the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service united Mayors across the country to spotlight the impact of national service and honor those who serve. Altogether, 832 Mayors in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico officially recognized the work that AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers are doing to make cities better and stronger. Together, these Mayors represent nearly 100 million citizens, or nearly one-third of all Americans.
The nation's mayors are increasingly turning to national service as a cost effective strategy to address city challenges. By unleashing the power of citizens, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs have a positive and lasting impact - making our cities better places to live. To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, mayors across the country will participate in the second-annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 1, 2014.
On this day, mayors will hold public events and use traditional and social media to highlight the value and impact of national service to the nation's cities. Last year, 832 Mayors representing nearly 100 million citizens participated in the inaugural Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. The initiative is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service; Cities of Service; the National League of Cities; and Mesa, AZ, Mayor Scott Smith, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Contact your local Mayor's office and ask that they support this national recognition. Sample proclamations can be seen at the CNCS website or can be provided through NSCA.

SCP 40th ANNIVERSARY
We have several key anniversaries approaching and we want to enlist the support of NSCA members to assist us in promoting and celebrating these events. In 2014 the Senior Companion program will have provided services for 40 years and we want to capture stories of success and inspiration for media distribution. We are looking for some novel stories that might include any of the following: -
Companions who are 2nd generation volunteers (mother/daughter, father/son-mother/son, etc.)
-
Celebrities who have benefitted from having a Senior Companion
-
Celebrities with parents who have a relationship to program
-
Clients who can articulate the value of having a Senior Companion
|
Also, NSCA has formed a planning committee to create ideas for the celebration of the anniversary. While several ideas are already in the development stage, they seek your help in identifying other ideas to be part of the 40th celebration in 2014. Below are some of the initial ideas that are in development:
- White House release of statement recognizing SCP's 40th anniversary,
- Distribute press releases to SCPs for local release,
- Senate and House floor recognition/proclamation,
- Recognition from Voices for National Service,
- SCP 40th anniversary pins,
- Anniversary theme, Making Independence a Reality, with a downloadable logo,
- Anniversary celebration at the 2014 National Senior Corps Conference,
- Populate YouTube channel with vignettes of volunteers speaking about the program.
If you have great stories about service of a Senior Companion, please share those with us for use in the Senior Corps Conference in May 2014.
As if that weren't enough, the Foster Grandparents Program will celebrate 50 years of service starting in 2015. We have the same request for stories from those of you associated with Foster Grandparents, send us stories that reflect the success and inspiration that are hallmarks of FGP.
Please share your ideas with us at info@nscatogether.org.

NSCA's Facebook page highlights the accomplishments of Senior Corps volunteers, innovative ideas for program design, grant opportunities and resources for grant writing, volunteer training materials and much more.
Direct community partners, new members, funders, legislators and other program supporters to the NSCA Facebook page for excellent examples of the impact created through the service of Senior Corps volunteers.
When those who view Facebook posts SHARE an article, NSCA's exposure increases exponentially because it is sent to other individuals and organizations that can then SHARE it with their network. The end result is broad visibility for NSCA and Senior Corps.
'LIKE' NSCA on Facebook and you will receive updates instantly to your Facebook newsfeed.
We advise Senior Corps project directors that program staff and stipended volunteers can only engage in lobbying activities on their own time and not "while charging time to a Corporation-supported program."
