Attending Rootstech 2016 Tips
Download the Rootstech 2016 App - available for both iOS and Android phones and tablets. This will give you the latest updates, speakers, vendors, maps and schedules.
The Exhibitor Hall is 20% BIGGER than last year - and last year was HUGE! This means wear comfortable walking shoes, check your coat and have a bag to collect info from vendors.
Plan your schedule of classes ahead of time and have a Plan B if your first choice fills up.
Look at the vendor list and make a list of those you want to be sure and see. Conference discounts are something I look forward to all year!
Talk to and network with other attendees. Some of the greatest learning happens outside the classroom!
Get out of the vendor hall and go to class! It is easy to get sucked in there and never leave. Budget your time wisely.

Q. Should we dismiss duplicate hints?
A. When FamilySearch captured records, sometimes they microfilmed a record twice. Accept both so you don't mess up the hinting algorithm. When you indicate a record is not a match, when actually it is but is just a duplicate, you confuse the system. Specify Not a Match only when it is truly not a match. A common scenario is a record that was filmed once, indexed once, but migrated twice. The two migration paths preserved different information. Consequently, FamilySearch decided to publish both until such time as the two could be detected and merged.

PERSI: The most potent genealogy resource you haven't used... until now!
What if you were sitting on a goldmine of genealogical information and you didn't know it? The kind of information that could help you locate rare records, break down brick walls, connect with other researchers and learn valuable information about the lives your own family lived. That would be pretty amazing, right?
The Periodical Source Index (PERSI) is that goldmine. Click here to learn more about PERSI.

A Word About the Privacy of Your Genealogy Information
I am relatively new to genealogy technology. Are there tips you can provide to ensure the security of personal information? Would building a family tree in software only [in] my computer be more secure than syncing it to a webpage (like MyHeritage)? Is it a good idea to not include details (name, date and place of birth) for all living relatives and maybe back a generation or two? Online Maps of Norway
Links to two maps of Norway were posted on the Norway mailing list today. Both Finn Kart ( http://kart.finn.no/) and Norgeskart ( http://www.norgeskart.no/) enable you to zoom in and locate specific places in Norway. Norgeskart clearly shows the counties when you zoom out. Finn Kart also includes the counties when you zoom in more closely. Both maps show the locations of Norwegian farms when you look at a specific area closely. Anyone with Norwegian ancestors should find these maps helpful. Click here for active links.

Suggestion for Weekly Bulletin Thought |
But what about you? Have you prayed about your own ancestors' work? Set aside those things in your life that don't really matter. Decide to do something that will have eternal consequences. Perhaps you have been prompted to look for ancestors but feel you are not a genealogist. Can you see that you don't have to be anymore? It all begins with love and a sincere desire to help those beyond the veil who can't help themselves. Check around. There will be someone in your area who can help you have success.

The other side of the wall
There was a young woman who took great pride in the growth and care of the flowers in her flower garden. She had been raised by her grandmother who taught her to love and care for flowers as she herself had done. So, like her grandmother, her flower garden was second to none. One day while looking through a flower catalogue she often ordered from, a picture of a plant immediately caught her eye. She had never seen blooms on a flower like that before. "I have to have it," she said to herself, and she immediately ordered it.When it arrived, she already had a place prepared to plant it. She planted it at the base of a stone wall at the back of her yard. It grew vigorously, with beautiful green leaves all over it, but there were no blooms. Day after day she continued to cultivate it, water it, feed it, and she even talked to it attempting to coax it to bloom. But, it was to no avail. One morning weeks later, as she stood before the vine, she contemplated how disappointed she was that her plant had not bloomed. She was giving considerable thought to cutting it down and planting something else in its place. It was at this point that her invalid neighbor, whose lot joined hers, called over to her. "Thank you so much! You can't imagine how much I have enjoyed the blooms of that vine you planted." The young woman walked through the gate into her neighbor's yard, and sure enough, she saw that on the other side of the wall the vine was filled with blooms. There were indeed the most beautiful blooms she had ever seen. The vine had crept through the crevices and it had not flowered on her side of the fence, it had flowered luxuriantly on the other side.Just because you cannot see the good result of your labour does not mean that it bore no fruit.
