What is the Most Important Skill for Finding Digital Records Online?
1) Learn how to search indexed databases on FamilySearch (free), Ancestry.com ($$), MyHeritage.com ($$) and FindMyPast.com ($$). Each website has extensive indexed databases, but their search algorithms are different. Some sites provide variations in search terms from "Exact" down to "Broad" that the user can control (e.g., sliders, wild cards, check boxes). Some sites provide the search results in one list of "Records" and some provide a "Categories" listing. Some sites provide additional record hints for the target person.
2) Learn how to use the "digital microfilm" on FamilySearch - that is, the "Browse images" collections that are not searchable from a search form. Use the Historical Record Collections page at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list to find collections by record type or by location. At present, FamilySearch has Probate Records for 30 states (some are by county) and 11 countries that are "browse images." They have Land Records for only 4 states, but they have Vital Records from many states and countries (some indexed and searchable, many are not).

Tracing Orphans in Your Ancestry
Tracing an ancestor who is known to be an orphan can be a difficult and daunting process. Modern-day DNA research is beginning to unlock longstanding mysteries regarding orphans, yet there are historical records which tell the larger picture of a child's life in an orphanage. As you look into the life and records of an orphan child, it is important to keep the history of America's orphanages in mind. Lean more, click here.
Highlight Important Areas of Document Images
Here is an easy way to highlight important areas of a document image. Just like using a highlighter pen on a paper document, this method will call attention to the specific information you want to emphasis. Learn how to do this - click here.
Digitization Options for Family Photos Including Slides, Film Negatives, and Home Movies
Scanning and digitizing photos take various approaches to get the job done: send them out to a service or scan them yourself. Many of us don't feel comfortable sending our precious photos out so we take the "do it yourself" route. However, the DIY approach requires making the right choices when it comes to purchasing equipment and actually scanning items so that the resulting digital files are useful for genealogy research.
The process becomes more complicated once you discover that you need to digitize items such as film negatives, slides, oversized photos, home movie film and more. Do you purchase one scanner to handle all of these items? Or must you spend money for specialized scanners that you'll only use a few times? Click this link to learn more.

Where to find Dutch genealogy records online
So you found out that your immigrant ancestor is Dutch. Perhaps you notice that the websites that you normally use don't have many Dutch records. Where do you go go next? Here are my favorite free websites to find records of our Dutch ancestors. All these websites provide free access to indexes, although some will charge to access or download scans. Click here to see the list.
The software has a very easy to use Browse, Simple Search and Advanced Search capability.

Remember...

The Traveling AngelsTwo traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansions guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement.
As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied..."Things arent always what they seem."
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good nights rest.
When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel, "How could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him", she accused. "The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die!"
"Things arent always what they seem", the older angel replied. "When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it. Then, last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave her the cow instead. Things arent always what they seem".
Sometimes this is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way you expected. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not know it until some time later.
